Forums - Microsoft - Bethesda on Xbox One: We're Still Unsure on Used Game Policy

The Fallout developer hasn't decided what it will be doing when it comes to used games on Xbox One.

Microsoft finally came out yesterday to add a bit more clarity to the Xbox One situation. We’ve all been left in the dark when it comes to used games, online connectivity, and a handful of other features integral to the next-generation console, and for the longest time, it seemed like Microsoft was content with the vitriol it was receiving due to poor messaging. That changed after the Xbox maker released some new information on the console, with one of the main points being the publisher’s ability to slap an activation fee on secondhand Xbox One games – even if Microsoft won’t.

“Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers,” yesterday’s statement reads. “Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games."

This left many onlookers wondering just who among their favorite gaming companies would actually charge for used games. GameSpot reached out to many different publishers to see if they could get a response, and while few answered the call, the fine folks behindThe Elder Scrolls and Fallout did have something to say on the matter.

“We haven't had time to fully understand and evaluate their policy," a company representative commented.

Honestly, I doubt any of us really have. All the mixed information we’ve been hearing from Microsoft representatives has almost made it impossible to consider all of the options when it comes to buying, selling, and playing games that someone owned before. With E3 just days away, we may soon learn what developers really think of the new policies.

It's going to be very interesting observing how they handle this at launch and the following months. They better get these things ironed out.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

This is more evidence i think that not every publisher is behind this DRM deal. Aside from EA, Activision and maybe Capcom.

its the same as sony as its up to them why the x1 is getting all the bad press is not right. sony has said that its policy on used games is also left up to the publisher

Yes, but look at this generation. Only EA, Activision, Capcom and sometimes Ubisoft made use of the DRM available. A lot of publisher won't use this, especially the Japanese ones. The Xbox One has it for every game, you know that beforehand.

A chance is better than nothing at all. That's why Microsoft is getting more heat for it. But to be honest Microsoft is not being critisized for this alone. There is the TV focus and always online thing.

I get the impression Sony won't employ these measures for their first party titles, and that's all that matters to me since I love their games. I only own 3 games from EA (the Mass Effect games) and 0 from Activision, so that's not an issue for me. I love R*'s games, and they don't seem interested in employing those measures either. It's only Capcom I 'might' have an issue with, but with the backlash they've been getting, I won't be surprised if they shied away from that .... or not lulz

and UbiSoft.

Whatever sort of DRM they will use, it will be used on the PS4 as well.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Sony will most definitely continue the Online Pass Program which is not that bad at all.

yeah but do you honestly think that a company will have no used on system but not on the other so in the end there the same.

yeah i know about the other things but i think the tv thing will be fixed at e3 if they are true about it being just about games.

and i think over time people will accept the online thing it may take awhile but i think ms will make it worth it in the end i could be wrong just my opion
