Anyways yea it always been ironic TBH. I think people need to take a step back and realize how much the internet is involved in their everyday lives. The connecting every 24 hours is not a problem and to be honest should not be a issue for MOSTpeople, especially the users on this site since they seem to post multiple times during various points of the day. Most people complaining on the internet about this have interest access. I also find it funny when someone says they are on their smartphones. If you can afford a smartphone with a data plan you can afford internet. I understand everyones situation is different and some people simple do not have internet at home, but honestly most of people need to calm down. I find it really hard to believe that most of people have crappy unstable internet connect all of a sudden. If you did why is this the first time we are hearing about it? Why wasn't steam bash for requring you to have internet access to buy and play your games? Its only happening because its a console. Embrace the future people this is the age of the interent whether you like it or not. |
Yeah, I've been trying to make this point about Steam on various forums/websites. Steam has DRM, and in some ways it's even MORE restrictive than what Microsoft is doing. You can't sell your games, you can't trade your games, you can't buy used Steam games; and just like with Xbox One, you MUST have internet (though to be fair, Steam has offline mode that lets you play offline for something like two weeks, something which Microsoft should try to implement in the future).
Yet despite these similarities, everyone who talks about Steam LOVES it! It's such a wonderful service! Gabe Newell is the greatest force for good in the games industry! I'm not sure I've come across anyone who was willing to rip on Steam just as hard as they have been ripping on Microsoft. Steam always seems to get a pass on this issue.
Why the double standard? Really the only answer I've heard is that Steam gives great sales. So from what I can gather, it's not really about corporations or consumers' rights to most people; it's about cheap games.
At any rate, it's a real eye-opener to think that Steam, which has various restrictive DRM, has over 50 million users, which is MORE than Xbox Live, which currently has less than 50 million users and NO DRM for the 360. The digital age is coming with all of its restrictions AND benefits, and tens of millions have already jumped on board. Console players like me have no choice but to get used to it, because it's the future. Maybe it won't arrive in full force until the end of the upcoming console generation, but like it or not it's on it's way, I don't currently see anything stopping it.
