Forums - Sony - Is Sony recovering their greatness? Does the PS4 have this generation locked?

wow the level of hype for ps4 is bigger than anything I've ever seen.
We haven't even seen the console 0_o

just like VITA got the generation locked several months before launch.

While I'm nowhere near calling this gen (I think it's ridiculous to even prognosticate at this point) saying that just because some fans were wrong about one console every fan who predicts that another console will do the same thing (different ones normally) is wrong is a flawed argument to say the least.

there was more than 'a few' fans saying the vita would dominate. and so far, fans saying is the only "factor" of ps4 success, so the comparisson is valid.

Still going strong with their Ps3 and letting the internet buzz do it's work on Microsoft while keeping pretty quiet themselves they are holding a good position to start off better than Microsoft.
E3 can change the negativity for MS though.
Saleswise their timely release will help out a lot if you just look at the numbers (probably).

I'd say Sony pretty much is going to "win" this gen by default, if you can even call it that, as I see all three console makers performing very poorly compared to last gen. Very few are going to put up with MS's DRM and anti-consumer BS other than the hardest of hardcore Xbox fan and the uninformed, and Nintendo seems content regressing back to their niche style Gamecube games at the expense of sales. But I don't really see Sony suddenly changing their ways from PS3 and making games that appeal to the mass market, and the device is likely going to be pricey yet again if they are indeed going to have 8 gig DDR5 ram. I also don't really see any stand out software that is going to light the PS4 sales on fire.. If Sony does get the most sales, it certainly won't be anywhere near PS2 style dominance.

if the ps4 is $50 or more cheaper then xbo I can see them winning.

Huh?  Economics will determine how well this gen compares to last gen, regardless of what consoles are offered.  We do not yet know the details of MS's DRM and personally I don't think a lot of people will care, Nintendo continues to make Nintendo games like they always have (how is that regressing?) and PS3 games have the broadest appeal of all 3 consoles?  Pricing hasn't been revealed yet, and neither has the launch lineup for any console.

Looking at it so far? Recovering their greatness? No.

Screwing it up slightly less then the other two? Probably.

Everything could still change by release, and who knows how the things will actually be received....

but so far. Sony looks like a kid who returns to straight A's because his History class is on a curve and one of his classmates turned in their work early without a fully formed concept on his idea, and the other turned in a paper that was on the quantum physics of black holes.

That is of course that it turns out the sony DRM isn't identical to the 360 DRM. Which I have an odd feeling it is, and Sony is just waiting to let MS take all the heat... going out of their way to bat down the idea of a DRM that microsoft explained wrong. When they both have the same DRM that is different from what everyone thought MS described due to the "Always on console" being conflated with "Always online." (When instead the DRM is sometimes online, and you can play your games offline (but they have to be authenticated and checked online, but this is where the PR dodging would come in.)

As it is, functionality wise, I actually think all three next gen consoles are a step backwords from last gen.  So it'd be hard for me to argue anyone is recovering to form.

The wii tablet wasn't functionally well thought out, and it's undue expense ignored.... and the Xboxone... could still win the generation.  Though it may win it due to it's non game issues.   It's just a matter of how much the proffessor likes quantum physicis.

Exactly, a big part of the reason they aren't going to do nearly as well this gen. The economy is in the crapper.

We do not yet know the details of MS's DRM and personally I don't think a lot of people will care,

Have you not read the reactions? 99% of people on boards like these are up in arms about the DRM stuff, and these are the kind of people that will buy almost anything the industry cranks out. How do you think the average consumer will react?

Nintendo continues to make Nintendo games like they always have (how is that regressing?)

Wii Fit/Sports/Play/Mario Kart Wii/ NSMB Wii vs... Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Fire Emblem, Zelda WW, etc... With Wii, Nintendo made unintimidating games that made it easy for the average consumer to jump in, as well of genre stretching new ideas that brought attention and new consumers in. With Wii U, I see very little of either of these.

and PS3 games have the broadest appeal of all 3 consoles?  Pricing hasn't been revealed yet, and neither has the launch lineup for any console.

I don't see it as having the broadest appeal. If it did, it would have earned the most sales. I see a (still) expensive console for the average consumer and complex, cinema-style games, that most of the "casuals" don't care about or are intimidated by. Pricing has not been revealed but I think it's pretty much a guarantee that PS4 will be $400 absolute minimum, and even that is a long shot.

still not valid.  If I said Boston would beat Pittsburgh during the regular season and it didn't happen (which it didn't) then before the Eastern Conference Finals I said they were going to beat Pittsburgh I would have been right.  Yet I made the same prediction and was wrong the first time.

If Xbox One is not fail prone Hardware...good luck in the states sony..

The 360 was mainly bought for multiplats and hearsay from Xbox Live. Sony has got those both covered in spades. MS is going to have a fight this generation especially since they are launching so close to each other. Sony will have the last word at E3, so I would continue with the caution as we will all see what MS has to offer and eventually Sony.
