Forums - Sony - Is Sony recovering their greatness? Does the PS4 have this generation locked?

Hey everyone,

Do you think this is the best time for Sony? Since the Last of Us is pretty much being hailed as the best game this generation and the PS4 offering tons of games, probably new IP's as well. Every site I go the PS4 pretty much obliterates the XB1 on polls. Is Sony back, to their glory days of ps2 domination.

What do you think?  Even I as a Nintendo fan want to jump ship and get a PS3 or PS4 at launch depending on the content. I remember that I only need a ps2 to get all many gaming needs. Any way with Japan pretty much ignoring Microsoft and Sony coming strong on Europe and the US. And the Wii U having it's heavy hitters most likely for next year(smash 4, Retro new project, HD zelda.) Which can boost sales but not by a long shot.

Is this generation for Sony to win it?

Too early to say. There is still a lot of information that has yet to be revealed (price, used game policy, etc) that, when revealed, could deflate some of the hype/momentum that has been built up so far.

As gamers domination is not greatness - we need a strong competition. Did you have less fun with ps3 than with ps2? Or let's say it in another way: Do you think you would've had more fun with ps3 if it would have dominated the market this gen like last gen? I just don't see the analogy with greatness and domination.

just like VITA got the generation locked several months before launch.

34 years playing games.

The things that made Sony 'great' (in the sense of selling lots of consoles and dominating the industry) was a variety of factors, many of which were beyond their control or simply pieces falling into place.

Some of the things that helped Sony to dominate they aren't even doing anymore. Timed exclusives (i.e. GTA on PS2) seem to be a thing of the past save for timed-exclusive DLC, and they seem to be a practice heavily adopted by one of the rival console manufacturers.

Advertising isn't as good as it was during the PS1 or PS2 era, in my opinion. The Sony adverts last holiday in the UK were pretty lame (Wonderbook/Family Fun/Vita). Nothing close to stuff like "PS9" or "double life". I mean yeah, those were abstract and didn't actually show any gameplay... but they damn well stuck in your mind. Closest I remember Sony getting is "the world is in play" advert they had for Vita when it launched.

I do, however, think Sony can end up doing well for themselves this generation. And I personally think that as a manufacturer/software developer they're in a much better place than they've ever been with multiple talented teams expanding so much that they break off into two.

I would have had way more fun if all my friends played on the same console.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Well, why didn't you buy the console your friends did? Either it's important to you or it isn't.

Sure looks like it.

Mario Galaxy says hi.

Mario Galaxy 2 says hi as well.

Other than that, a generation isn't won on specs. The games make the difference. What has been announced for PS4 so far is nothing gen-winning.
Also, although PS4 has the upper hand in specs, we still don't know the PS4's price tag. The latest rumor is around 500 USD. That's not good imo. Better than the PS3 at launch but still too expensive for a console.
The PS3 had an expensive blu-ray drive, a brand-spanking new IBM processor and a gpu derived from a 349,- desktop gpu. Enough excuses for the 599,- price tag. The PS4 has got a low power notebook processor that costs Sony 40,- USD a piece, a gpu derived from a 199,- USD desktop gpu and no other groundbreaking tech. It only has a large amount of GDDR5 RAM.
Unless they include a PS Eye or want to make a profit on each unit sold I don't understand that price point at all. Especially because it leaves a lot of room for Microsoft to undercut them. And with the majority of the gamers not caring about whether their system is pushing 1.2 or 1.8 TFLOPS, I'd say that's one big deal breaker.
