The GC also helped Nintendo become even less relevant to core gamers.

"Core" gamers, at least the self-described type, are themselves becoming less relevant. As gaming expands, they've become a minority. A system no longer needs to win over the "core" to be successful product.

You can't make games for non-gamers. If they play games, they're a gamer.

I wouldn't consider senior citizens who used to play Wii Sports once in a while gamers.
