Forums - Politics - Poll: What's your social class? Upper, middle or working class?

What's your social class?

Working class 32 25.60%

Middle class 38 30.40%

Upper class 24 19.20%

Jedi / See results 31 24.80%

Total:125

Just a quick poll out of curiosity for the statistical result, no need to explain your answer unless you want to.

EDIT: I just realized that this three-class-model might be too oversimplified. If one considers himself to be "poor", "underclass" or "lower class", please choose "working class" instead.

But...where is the poll?

Sorry, you were too quick. Seems like the thread already gets published while you still add the poll.

Pushing this thread once to get just a few more votes.

I am in the middle of poverty and misery. Anyone got any spare change?

I've always considered myself as good as anyone I know, so upperstratosphereclass

I think my family is definitely in the lower class portion. It's something i'm trying to change by going to school, so hopefully I don't have to live week by week like we do now.

Now that quite a couple of people have voted, let me explain why I was interested in the results:

I recently read an article that stated that most people consider themselves to be "middle class", even though in practice the majority of the population is working class or lower.

I found that quite interesting, because I too would have instantly considered myself to be "middle class" as well, but without having any clue how these classes are actually defined.

Now there doesn't seem to be a clear, commonly accepted definition anyway, but I still found the claim that most people consider themselves to be middle class very interesting.

Because I suddenly realized that when politicians in my country talk publically about social classes, they always claim to be mainly concerned about the middle class. They're either saying that certain policies would hurt the middle class (if they don't like them), or that the policies that they like will help the middle class (if they are in favor of them).

If it's true that almost everyone considers himself to be middle class - no matter if correctly or not - and these politicians are aware of this, then this might be a very clever strategy to create consensus: For whatever they propose, everyone will believe that it's ultimately going to help themselves, as a supposed member of the middle class.

While the first votes were indeed almost all "middle class", the preliminary results are more diverse and realistic than I expected btw.

Way too many people consider themselves to be "upper class" of course, but I'm surprised that so many people indeed realize that they are working class or lower. Maybe it has to do with the language? "Working class" sounds rather neutral or even slightly positive to me, while In my own language, german, the corresponding word has an extremely negative touch ("Unterschicht" - which kind of reminds of "Untermensch"). I wonder if the results would be different in a german forum.

I have to work 6 days a week 11 hours a day, I have to do this simply so I can pay my mortgage and bills and get shopping. It's a horrible way to live but sadly that's the way we've made life for our selfs in 1st world countries, if u don't work you Havnt got a life.
if u Havnt got alot of money.

So I say I'm working class.
