Forums - Gaming - What can Sony do to compete with Xbox One on the non-gaming features side?

In terms of extra features, Microsoft has a vast ecosystem of products they are integrating in to Xbox One.

For example:

Skype for Voice calling - Will Sony try to match and provide Tango or some other VOIP service and then integrate it in to gaming? If not, will this become the new "It doesn't have cross game chat with video" strike against PS4?

Skydrive for cloud storage - Each Xbox account has 7 GB of cloud sotrage on Skydrive. They can upload their in game screenshots, video captures to Skydrive and immediatly access them on their PC or smartphone. Will Sony have to strike a deal with Dropbox or Google Drive to compete here?

Windows kernel - Xbox One is running a modified version of Windows Kernel and this should give it a big advantage when it comes to multitasking, snap view, app porting etc... Sony will have to work very hard to develop XMB to be as robust as possible in order to compete Xbox One's dashboard and provide dev tools for app development as good as Windows.

Azure - It appears that Microsoft cloud is going to be working overtime for Xbox One. Other than Gaikai Sony does not have a vast cloud offerings they could utilize for non streaming purposes. They could possibly partner with Amazon S3.

Kinect 2.0 - The tracking capabilities demonstrated by Kinect 2.0 appear to be superior to anything currently available. Sony has their eyeToy but will that be enough? Also voice detection and recognition provided by Kinect should be very robust thanks to being available and perfected on the Windows side for almost a decade.

It's pretty clear that Microsoft is bringing their whole suite of services to Xbox One. Can Sony counter these features with something of their own or will they have to make partnerships with companies to match?

Will they even bother or just focus on gaming? I am not sure they can beat Microsoft when it comes to features...

Skype, app multitasking/snap mode, and kinect superiority to PS eye are major points.

But Sony won't address them significantly IMO. They will have enough multimedia to get by and push the games agenda. Essentially, their fans won't care that PS4 isn't a better media box.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

the only feature that i really care about with all the entertainment is the voice controls for media. Other than that being able to stream any file from my pc would be great too.

Bundle it with a Bravia,Tablet S and Xperia Z.

Skype - I'm not sure but Vita have Skype so why PS4 can't have too? Anyway others voice/video calling service will be supported by PS4 too.

Skydrive - Sony have their own cloud storage service and they will make others patners for that too.

Windows - Windows kernel better for multitasking? Sorry but it is worst than Linux and Mac OSX (BSD based) for multitasking... Sony will use a OS with BSD kernel and I can't see worst multitasking here... but I agree Windows have better UI but Sony can put a good UI over BSD too.

Azure - That is yet uncertain over the cloud services... Sony bought Gaikai for nothing?

Kinect 2.0 - That is really better than PSEye.

Some valid points...however:

Sony may have a Skype app for PS4 but it will not be integrated in to gaming like on the xbox. If you have to launch the skype app to talk to a buddy seperatly from the game, its a moot point.

Another Windows kernel major advantage is app development. They can make an app for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Xbox One in one Swoop.

Azure and Gaikai are not even close to each other in terms their capabilities. Azure can do stuff Gaikai does (game streaming)...don't forget OnLive uses Azure for streaming. But Gaikai can not do cloud hosting and computing like Azure. Nothing currently can compete with Azure in terms of speed and reliability except Amazon S3 hosting.

Does the Xbone have blu-ray? That is Sony's go to non-gaming feature.

lol...yeah it does.

The only thing that cannot be done is the hand gesture control because I would imagine that's patented but everything else can be done with ease. The exclusive NFL content is something that NFL fans are actually complaining about. We do not need all this behind the scenes crap and the fantasy stuff is nothing that cannot be done from your tablet or PC or even PS4 for that matter, in the way of apps. If this exclusive content was that you could watch all your teams games (LETS GO GIANTS!), then I would be the first in line to get THE ONE, but its not, so I'm not.

Just wanted to give my opinion
1. Wii U has Video chat so no reason Sony can't do their own thing with it
2. I don't see Sony having an issue doing something like that. Sony has been online longer than the PS brand has.
3. To me that is a negative. Part of whats wrong with PCs today is Windows. Sorry I just honestly believe that if MS were forced to compete in the OS market since the 80's that OS would be a hell of a lot better today and look at Windows 8 compared to Windows 7. Few people consider it an advancement or improvement over 7. Just because its Windows doesnt mean its going to be optimized to run well and not be sloppy code.
4. I really don't think you understand Sony's online presence and all they own or how what they already own can be used for cloud storage and not just gaming.
5. Since Sony has a competing product and neither has been shown to be a system seller, its not going to matter either way.

Nothing? Because no one cares. :)

I'm sure they will have quite a few things. The Vita already has plenty. But these are far from the focus.
