jay, honestly you need to go back and rewatch the sony conference, the entire show was about how the console was a back to the drawing board focus on games and gamers, lots of demos lots of trailers lots of tech, specific yo the point detail and clear focus on thier direction.
Microsoft came out and showed off the hardware then demonstrated it with only a ui implamentation snd a very brief non-live bit of fifa gameplay, everything else was prerenderes trailer anf jargon or tv related features barely anyone outside of the US will use, they completely neglected to say if the console would ir could even record tv so until they soecify this its not actually a DVR, and uk customers arent going to want to disconnect their sky, bt or virgin media box to plug in to the xbox one because it just add uneeded complixity to hardware that does the same thing natively, but better (record multiple channels at once), not sure about you but switching between hdmi sources on my tv is instant too...
then they followed up the actual event that was wishy washy on details with the negative answers (shittonnes of them)
last but not least i think you kinda miss something with regards to gdde5, to make moving smaller chinks of data efficient theyre stacked (several packets of data in one block) so that the end result is shifting the data quickly, for even smaller chunks of data that need to move faster than a pipeline queue thdy can simple occupy l2 cache.
this isnt a pc, the overheads that make gddr5 have issues for system memory arent anywhere near as big an issue on a closed system with hardware in complete unrestricted control of resources.
i was also peeved at the major nelsin follow up 'tech' segment where on multiple instances the panel mentioned how its important fir developers to know what they have to work with but never came out and flately stated what the memory devide is, as such i assume its around 3/5 or 4/4 given the 3 os stuff.
last but not least one of the panel carefully worded the system as being able to move data at a speed if 'over 200gb/s through its subsystem', its clear here that overall system pipeline speed is not that fast and theyre simply covering up the facts by instead stating subsystem (moving from l2 to cpu) rather than coming out and saying the actual mem bus speed, they also only stated the memory as using sram. both sram and ddr3 are incapable of 200gb/s even with lz77 compression and esram assisting, which is why i raided an eyebrow.
all in all i was excited right up to the mid to late part of the tv features then it all went downhill.
