Forums - Gaming - Splitscreen is "sooo PS2"

Warning: rant following!

One good day, I downloaded the Motorstorm (PS3) demo. I didn't expect much, but it turned out to be lots of fun. So I thought, "you know what? I'm gona buy this game. It'd be awesome playing this game with my girl, what with all the over-the-top action and all".

I was WRONG. The game didn't have multiplayer. It features online, but c'mon, online is no substitute for splitscreen (real) multiplayer!

Fast forward to today. I was thinking about buying BurnOut for PS3, you know, to play multiplayer, what with all the over-the-top action and all.

...

So I checked out the internet, and saw a developer of BurnOut say (literaly) "We're not doing splitscreen. Splitscreen is too much "PS2".

WTF? So you mean, having fun with a couple of friends gaming on the sofa with some beer and snacks was getting old? Playing on your own against people on the net you don't know is "splitscreen evolved"?

I f'ckn want to play some splitscreen games on my PS3, I f'ckn bought a second controller, but not ONE game I'm interested in features splitscreen anymore. All first person shooters feature online, but no splitscreen, all race games feature online, but no splitscreen. What's next, Singstar without a multiplayer component?

Conclusion: this sucks monkey balls, and don't take this as a fanboy comment, but: the Wii is the only next-gen console in this respect. PS3 (and I would guess 360) are last-last-last gen (you know, SNES era) because they don't even feauture f'ckn multiplayer, something that was there on every f'ckn N64 game!

BAH!

Discuss.

yeah, i want too see the face of my friends when i beat them^^
imo that is one of the major things of gaming playing with friends
it is really a shame that they can't/won't implement splitscreen AND online multiplayer

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I agree, there needs to be more focus on actual interaction with friends. Playing Halo 3 online can't begin to compare to 4 player split screen Golden eye. I dunno why they are moving away from actual human interaction. All I can say is "I can't wait for brawl! Online and in person!"

^^agree. A lot of the games don't feature splitscreen MP likely because they tax the system enough rendering the game just once, let alone 2, 3 or 4 times (Here's looking at you, Crackdown!). But come on, at least they can tone down textures and give a slightly lower framerate!

That's why I can't wait for SSBB (though it's not technically splitscreen, but you know what I mean)

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I guess it all depends on what type of games also :P, to be honest I've never played a strait forward racing game with friends :x, just not quite my thing, however, my friends and I have been blowing the shit out of each other in Warhawks via 4 player split-screen :P then having 12 other online players join us xD and the best part is that you can hop in or drop out at the press of a button :P

It all depends on the developer, not the console maker. Haze will be featuring 4 player split-screen co-op and multi, Little Big planet will be 4 player, I believe it's cool that Nintendo games in general sell better when they're of the "party oriented" type, I would definitely say Nintendo is the play-with-your-friends console. The ONLY game that saw life on my roomates game-cube was SSMB :P However if your looking for a racing game with split screen I cant help you :x

Man, Mariokart 64, now that game had split screens!

splitscreen is the only way to play multiplayer games.

I agree with the OP. I went and bought Motorstorm and I expected to play my friends in my living room. Then I bought Burnout Paradise, great game but no splitscreen. The PS3 doesn't seem to have nearly as many good splitscreen as the Wii.

Yeah... I agree the trend of getting rid of splitscreen and doing online only pisses me off to no end.

If anythin games should have online split screen standard. (for games with outline.)

Anything else is bs in my opinion.

Games that don't have local 2 player that have online 2 player drop big on my buy list.

Medal of Honour Heroes went from a must buy, to a not buy. (but i got it as a gift.  Go figure.)
