Forums - Gaming Discussion - Confirmed: 3GB OF DDR3 ram in XBOX one will be used to run the OS

Comparing to PC Win 8 @ 2GB (64-bit) 3GB is quite a chunk! Massive leap from last Gen for both MS and SONY.

Yoshida lost the event?

I think most multi-plat games will then use 5GB by default as devs aren't going to want the headache of mismatched ports.

Exactly. That's the big bummer. That multiplats will be developed for the lowest common denominator. Makes me so sad.

At the end of the gen Sony will have superior multiplats because those games are going to be eating up ram at the end of the gen.

You mean like happened in the case of the 360 at the end of the gen due to its superior memory architecture last gen...

Please stop guessing.  All the bandwidth and memory in the world counts for nothing if the rest of your system can't keep it fully utilized, we will not know that until final hardware revisions are in developers hands.

That sounds about right to me. The thing most people don't consider is that with that much ram (yes even 5 GB) the bottleneck will still come from the GPU not the ram.

If Sony have low balled on the OS footprint they are going to be a long way behind the 360 on software features as this gen progresses. It'll be like cross game chat this gen but a lot worse. They better hope more available RAM sells more games that the complete experience Microsoft are marketing.

Actually yes. There were certain things wrong with the PS3 that made their port inferior.

Which were present at the start more rather than the end.

1GB is more than enough for an OS.  Especially considering what MS pulled off with the 360 with only 512MB of RAM for the OS AND games.  Or what Sony pulled off with 256MB of system RAM for the OS AND partially used by games.  So yea, 1GB will be fine.
