Forums - General - Huge Oklahoma Tornado: Dozens Killed

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22604251

At least 91 people, including 20 children, are feared killed by a huge tornado which tore through Oklahoma City suburbs, officials in the US state say.

Worst hit was Moore, south of the city, where neighbourhoods were flattened and schools destroyed by winds of up to 200mph (320km/h).

About 120 people are being treated in hospitals.

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in Oklahoma.

He also ordered the federal authorities to join in the search and recovery efforts which are continuing throughout the night.

Monday's twister hit Moore, a suburb of about 55,000 people, and remained on the ground for about 45 minutes.

The Oklahoma chief medical examiner's office said at least 20 children were among the 91 dead.

------

Really tragic news, especially since it struck a school. Could end up as one of the most devastating tornadoes in recent US history.

this was on the british news earlier. Pretty sad really.

The thing i dont understand though is why someone would voluntarily live and stay in an area nicknamed tornado valley. I remember the disaster from the late 90's. Would just seem like common sense to not stay in an area like that. Or is out of the residents control just to skip states and various areas?

that's like saying why do people stay in florida because of hurricanes. Are CA because of earthquakes. It is what it is. You can't live in fear of what you can't control. Disasters can happen anytime, anywere. I live in oklahoma city. Moore is probaby 30 minutes south of  oklahoma city. Moore always seems to get hit hard. I use to live in moore for a few years as a kid. It's weird that tornadoes always seem to hit north are south of oklahoma city. Summer time is when this always seems to happen. Sorry about the rant. Watching the local news all day yesterday, got me all wound up. I'm going to watch some movies are something.

Dont worry, i can understand because it is a very serious real world subject. It just boggles the mind that people would stay in these natural disaster danger zones. Like when people live in well known flood planes.

I hope everyone involved in this disaster are able to come out of it with as little trouble as possible.

Im watching the wrestling

Truly a travesty. Can't residents be forewarned of a natural disaster such as this so they can evacuate?

I know this is bad but tornadoes happen hundred's of times every year

This was a bad one. I heard a story on the radio about a teacher who latched all the desks in the classroom together and the kids hid under the desks. Saved them when the school was ripped to shreds!

I've heard a few incredible survivor stories already - this was an insane event

Do you guys have tornadoes in England?

The UK actually has the second most tornadoes per square mile in the entire world! One notable tornado was one we had in Birmingham in 2005

No.

Our worst natural disasters are light floods where 1 person dies after they drive their car into a swollen river.

EDIT: Guess I was wrong. I do remember that tornado in 2005 now though.
