Forums - Gaming - Destructoid suspends writer for outing scam artist as transgendered

First of all, this person wouldn't be or shouldn't be a candidate for sex reassignment, nor does it sound like he (if merely a TV) or she (if on hormone replacement theraphy) was mentally or emotionally stable enough for it.

Rather than outing the individual for the cheap thrills of breaking a scam, the writer should have dug into the deeper story of this person, why they were so desperate to undergo sex reassignment surgery without following the SOP for a transexual.

Generally speaking to go through sex reassignment, you first have to consult with a psychologist, then begin hormone replacement therapy, and after living for a period of time (a year?) as a 100% female, undergo sex reassignment surgery.  The reason this approach is taken is for many men this is a kink, a fantasy/fetish, and to undergo the surgery as well as the hormone replacement means a lot of physical as well as emotional changes one may or may not be prepared for.

The sex drive alone undergoes a drastic change while on hormone replacment therapy, having a "vagina" doesn't restore the male libido.  Not to mention, if you have emotional problems, those aren't going to go away overnight.  They'll only get worse.

It was a missed opportunity to approach a bigger story, which could have had a greater impact than breaking a story about a scam perpetrated by someone that was clearly emotionally troubled.  Should he be fired, no.  Not unless something happens to the individual as a result of his outing him.  However, he should have been smarter about the whole thing and approached it from a different angle.

As for the actual story, Allistair Pinsof did the right thing. Sagal being transgendered is a vital and relative part of the scam. It cannot be glossed over. Sagal was committing fraud and should thus lose all consideration in terms of the details behind the situation.

That's how I see it. If it weren't at all relevant to the story and Sagal had been scamming people for, say, rent money, then it would be a pretty dick move and should perhaps be a fireable offense to just casually drop that information. But given the nature of the story, I don't think it's good journalism to leave that kind of information out (even though Sagal hardly needed "outing" in the first place).

The problem with your line of thought is that Sagal is emotionally unwell.  This is evident from the limited amount of information in your original post.  There are two types of men who go into sexual reassignment, those who are mentally and emotionally women (i.e. they identify as a woman) and then there are those who go into sex reassignment as a kink.  The begin thinking this is what they want only to realize at some point it isn't.  For most of these men, if they're going through the proceedure with a doctor, during hormone replacement.  However, for some men, it can happen after everything is said and done.  There have even been some who have made the transition from man to woman, then back again to a male.

The fraud wasn't the story.  The bigger story was an individual so troubled that they would attempt to go to extremes in an effort to undergo sex reassignment.  Had he stuck with the story and explored it deeper, learned the process of sex reassignment, got outside professional opinions regarding the person, then did a story with changed names, things might be different.

I don't think, in the end, this necessarily helps Sagal with his emotional problems.  It'll likely only make it worse.

You are assuming quite a lot. Firstly, that Pinsof did this for a cheap thrill rather than to get something off his chest (namely, that Sagal was blackmailing him into silence by threatening suicide). He seemed legitimately distraught and didn't go the Kotaku route and write a clickbait article, he just told what he knew on Twitter. Secondly, you assume that there would have been less backlash from any type of article - no matter how high-minded - in which Pinsof still "outed" Sagal. I think that is a pretty huge assumption.

What did Pinsof need to get off his chest?  I'm sorry but if you're a journalist you go after the story, you don't turn away from it.

My only assumption is that Pinsof found not the fraud disgusting, but the individual, and not for his attempt to con people out of their money for his own personal benefit, but because he found Sagal's reasoning for it, surgery for sex reassignment, to be disgusting and loathsome.  I think he could have written a thoughtful article, where the names were changed, which I stated, that could have been beneficial to both the individual, the TS community, as well as to indivudals who try to help people they deem in need.  Sagal is indeed in need, but not for money, instead for some serious psychological help.

I was part of a community that got emotionally con'd by an individual.  We were told big lies.  I understand the anger and resentment that whole online communities can feel, but in this situation you're not dealing with someone emotionally stable.  You're dealing with someone clearly isn't able to handle his present emotional as well as psychological state.

Again, I think if he was a true journalist, he would have gone after the story rather than exposed a person.

If she/he had just been completely honest she/he would've probably gotten the money aswell, hell I'd probably have donated a bit.

Yeah, I thought so, too. Shit, it's such a trendy thing to do nowadays that it probably would have raised even more money, sadly.

That is indeed the weird bit about this. It could certainly be seen at least as a sympathetic cause.

maybe my english is too bad to understand the whole plot but

why the hell should destructoid have the right to forbid its employee to talk about this,or have the right to fire him.

He was told something(though he may has not have asked her/im)
he even calmed this person not to commit suicide
since that moment this person(chloe) posted in a forum to commit suicide almost everything was public and as he seems to look very much like a man though pretending to be a woman his transgender orientation was also obvious.
If chloe was really busy to keep things secret he would not post suicide attempts in forums.

chloes problem is not pinsoff comment.
seems he is always searching for a reason for suicide-but he does not wish to die.If he was really trying to die he would not talk to pinsof about suicide nor post such things in forums. He is looking for attention and help.
chloes problem is not pinsoff, nor the wish to die but the money for the surgery to change his gender into her.

i suggest:
pinsoff should keep his job instead of being Adam Orthed but donate 2000 dollars(because he broke his promis to keep quiet, though it is hard to keep a secret that is not a secret)
Destructoid to do the same-as they pretend to be interessted in chloes health(that's why i think your last question(destructoid/heat) is close to the truth.
each of the shitstorm boys/girls-ladyboys shall donate 10 dollars if they really support chloe until 31000dollars are reached and the surgery can be done.
