The Last of Us demo is coming in two weeks.

This game is all but original :)
Like many game it will have good graphics, maybe a good story and gameplay... But nothing very original in it.

OP: I think that it is too risky for big publishers/developes to come out with new IPs and esp. new gender.
It is a bet they are not willing to take that late in a console cycle. I really first person games because I find them very immersive; the majority of these games are shooters but you also have other kind of games like Skyrim etc... With the new Xbox / Playstation coming out; we will certainly see some publishers/developers taking some risks and I would not be surprised to see some new and original games :)

Also a shooter can come out with a lot of original ideas...
People should be more open when they are looking for originality. I did not see a lot lately I have to admit but any type of game can bring their own piece of originality. :)

Monaco... This is a jewel. Everyone owning an Xbox 360 or a PC should try this game :)

Bought it this week and I love it. I'm playing it with my kids and the game is great and very refreshing.

I think people are confusing a good story and gameplay with originality. Bioshock Infinite is imo an amazing game, but it doesn't do anything original (maybe the skyhook mechanic, but other games have probably done that before).

I think of originality something like Skyward Sword, whether you like, hate or don't care about the game, as far as I know there hasn't been a game that plays like that thanks to the motion controls. Like I said you may hate the game and think it's a gimmick but we have never seen that type of gameplay before.

People like to bring Braid to the table and although I really really enjoy that game, there's not really anything original about it. The game simple takes other gameplay mechanics that has been used before and combines them to make a really enjoyable (and even a masterpiece for some) game.

Portal is another original game, as far as I know there has never been a game like that before. New gameplay mechanics that were used in an amazing way.

Borderlands is another amazing game, but when you really think about it the only "original" things it does are the weapons and how you used them. The story of that game is hilarious, but it's not really original.

There are tons of other examples, but you get the idea. Originality =/= good gameplay or story.

I think not. it just seems that way because there are so many more games available these days. The amount of original ips are probably the same but there are just many more sequels available. i mean look at beyond, last of us, watch dogs, gta 5. i know its a sequel but new concepts. and many more just in this year

im not saying what you said is wrong, but what you mentioned is originality in gameplay, and gameplay only. while bioshock does play a lot similar to other FPS games the premis, art style and concept of the game is original.

I agree with both points.  I'd like Nintendo a lot more if everything wasn't Mario X (which is probably an actual title in development).  And, please, don't talk to me about "the year of Luigi", he's just a green Mario.  Nintendo can do what they want, I'm fine with that, but it's not an approach that interests me.

You don't know Luigi.

OT: As long as it doesn't go as far as the Movie Industry, we be good. (This could be taken as sarcasm to some people... I actually don't think the Movie Industry has lost all of it's originality.

You should pay more attention to Pixar

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

I'd say last of us while perhaps not original (like Halo), are evolving the third person combat/adventure gameplay.
Everything you've seen in the trailer was real time, non-cutscene, non-scripted. Gamers were seriously calling Naughty Dog liars.

Minds were blown.

Oh definitely... I think the game will look fantastic; but nothing to do with originality.
To be honnest, Halo 4 is not original in any way to me, even if I'm a big fan of the story/universe/gameplay :)
Now, I think games can be good even without being especialy original... Halo 4 is a good exemple.

Also, I think it is a matter of perception. Some people will find one game original and other people will not; and gameplay/story may also play a huge part into the oppinion (this my oppinion at least )
