This again... I need to bring up the receipts to shut it down. But all I have to say is: THE PSP IS A HANDHELD, WII IS A CONSOLE. Of course there was going to be a decline from Freedom/What not to Tri, and Tri is still the BEST SELLING CONSOLE MH GAME.
The franchise did not decline much further because it gained more relevance with the 3U and 4 release on 3DS; both within Japan AND OVERSEAS.
And I 100% agree with the user that mentioned how much the industry has declined, its true and truly funny how people get over analytical because the PS4 sells 24k then 27k. But DO keep in mind that 1m+ IS impressive for this day and age. Smash 3DS did it and it was glorious, Dragon Quest games will surely do it too (*SKUS combined though).

You can argue slightly more relevance overseas (although the difference between what PSP entries sold and what 3DS entries sold is very little), but in Japan, that statement is false. Less sales =/= more relevance ever.
and no defense of the decline of the industry from me. I will always consider that in comparisons and it's why nothing with ever come close to MHP3 from Capcom.

Only one PSP MH title sold more than 4 million, THREE MH 3DS games have sold more than 4 million. Mind you MH 4 was only released in Japan after the huge decline the market saw. Capcom bothered to localize 3U for Wii U because Tri did better than any PS2 title, and they didn't bother to localize the PS3 HD ports.
Heck, the next main line entry in the series is aimed at overseas markets. Not because they need it, but because the demand exists. Also keep in mind that MH4 probably could've gone past 5 million had they not announced 4U.
OT: Wow at the Top 3. This is getting interesting.
