Forums - Nintendo - Wii U CPU + GPU clock speeds increased? Is it even possible?

I think we can say that things are getting hotter in the Wii U situation.
Besides that, that raise is hardly the truth, it is way too much.
Gosh at those PS360 coolers. They are freaking monstrosities, Especially the 2nd to last one.

This couldn't possibly be true...

A slight increase is possible but tripling it...jesus

lol I just ordered the very last one for the PS3 Slim on ebay for 13 bucks(last one at that price :P) after getting that Wii U one earlier.

WOW Did you guys never used any external cooling system for the consoles?

I used a lot in PS2 age... now for PS3 and Wii I didn't use but that because my room is really below the avg. temperature here (my girlfriend says my bedroom is so cold sometimes lol)... and I have a PS3 Slim model.

I think the consoles are made/projeted to temperatures like EU, US and Japan... I know these place have hot times too but for me it is cold yet lol lol lol... eg. I can't enter in the sea in Europe .

Well, at least it is not the one above it. (:

At least I don't need any coolers (at the moment at least). But when I get my Wii U, I will have too see about that. Luckily by the time I get one it will be Winter, so no need for coolers by then.

I never did. I just didn't trust they'd work. Freinds told me to try it and I didn't listen. Got RRoD.... Ah well, gave me an excuse to buy the sexy slim.

Why shouldn't it be? The PSP also did this.

PSP was underclocked by default for power reasons.

That is to say it was running under specification so clock speeds weren't "increased" they were just set as high as they should have been in the first place.

Don't know if that's the case with the Wii-U, incredibly unlikely, or unbelieveable (genuinely, not in the "amazing unbelivable" way.)

Going from circa 1.5Ghz to 3.xx Ghz is just asking a bit much to take seriously that Nintendo would have released the console at only 1.5Ghz considering the moaning the low CPU speed has caused and being responsible for the frame rate issues in the current ports.

There's no reason for the Wii-U to have been underclocked like there was with the PSP, power isn't an issue obviously as it doesn't run on batteries.

Pretty much ever processor ever made is "underclocked".  They do this to keep reliability.  I'm not saying that Nintendo could increase the speed by much, but with a firmware update, they could run the processor at a slightly higher speed if they are comfortable with the stability and reliability at that speed.  Though, it doesn't sound like something Nintendo would typically do.  Nintendo would rather under power the system than have a RROD or YLOD issue on their hands.  They tend to always play it safe with hardware and for that reason pretty much always have the more reliable systems in the industry.

Stop hating and start playing.

In one of the Iwata asks, Satoru stated how they do extensive tests, running HW for thousands of hours! Judging by how badly unoptimized the OS was, its clear Nintendo was not ready to release Wii U, but had their mind set on holiday '12. Its very possible, even probable, that Nintendo underclocked Wii U to be on the safe side, to just receive current gen ports while it enjoys the "headstart", as it continues to do more hardware tests. Obviously, there is plenty of room as far as power consumption goes, 75w max (current 33w usage).

A modest bump on the cpu and gpu are believable and I do expect it to be unlocked (along with more ram) in the future. I doublt the intent is to dupe competition , but its Nintendo being more on the safe side as they do more tests to get the final lock down on specs. Lastly, Iwata recently stated that he has to convince devs that the console is not underpowered. Iwata directly addressing the power issue, as if disputing it, lends credence to a possible HW update via firmware.

I don't need them since I live around Seattle lol, but it's always nice to have, I modded my 360 and added shit to it as well when I still had it since it was a major issue at the time too, you just never know.

Wasn't it confirmed that the Wii U was in fact underclocked? I wouldn't be surprised if the update did alter the clock speeds.
