This is a strange acknowledgement from a company that just released the 3DS and WiiU. Two systems who spec-wise cannot support any new level of gameplay (from a strictly power perspective) and who's unique abilities (3D/2nd screen) have also failed to create a new venue of gameplay or even a sense of such.

They have also been heavily reliant on old/classic IPs as of the last couple years (and we all know we'll be seeing 3D Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash Bros on WiiU even without any announcement of such).

Which new levels of gameplay were created when we jumped from the 6th to 7th Generation ? I´m genuinly curious !

User generated content is one of them.  What you saw with the likes of Call of Duty 4 is another one, adding RPG to FPS.  Online play fully came on its own.  The adding of DLC extended game life.  You also had achievements that got added.

Those are new elements, I agree with you, but do you think these changes were related to the power of the consoles ?

Shenanigans. I was making my own skaters, decks, skateparks, and tricks in Tony Hawk long before 7th gen started. Nothing you mentioned except online play** was impossible on 6th-gen consoles, it just wasn't pervasive.

**Dreamcast.

Lol Nintendo should take its own advise, I mean their games are great but Zelda and Mario seriously need to expand, stop wit the shitty save the princess storyline please

having the same "shitty" story line is briliiant. Because everyone knows the next game will be same story and each time nintendo does not have to invest alot into topping the next. It's like Amazing story then the next one has to be evan better or fans will be massively dissapointed, this way they can just coast and the fans dont have much expectations from a saving the princess story.

This is exactly where I wanted to go: User generated content was in its infancy (By the way Jet Set Radio had it, you could upload your drawings) because the integration of the Internet wasn´t very good and consoles lacked the storage Space (with the exception being the Ps2´s HDD) for "big projects", RPG elements in FPSs are just Game Design, online play see obove/DLC, and achievements  don´t require a massive amount of processing power either.

Don't like em? Simply play another game. It's that easy! ;)

Since only 1 out of the 16 (or 4 if you stretch the definition a little) Zelda games has the 'shitty save the princess' storyline, I'd say they're on the right track.

I wonder if they will actually create new ips instead of making 100 Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda games a year. If not then they will be complete hypocrites.

I wish. Then there would actually be some new unique experiences to play.

Quite a good analysis of the current status in the Video Game industry, I would say. Saturation does play a major part in why there might be less and less blockbuster titles. (It could also be that developers have gone off their rockers.)

LOL Blockbuster titles havent ended for Sony in five years, pretty much the Wii's existence. They dont allow saturation to stop their sales. Microsoft used kinect to stay ahead of Sony. The profits for the games are dwindling though, so they really need to prepare for something new. Perhaps saturation is the issue.

I never really saw blockbuster-like sales for most Sony exclusives during the PS3 era. But whatever.

I agree with you that profits are dwindling, though. Maby certain developers have gotten out of touch with their series'.
