I have seen companies (for example Stardock)  stores purposely not sell a product directly to customers on purpose the first few weeks or so to encourage people to get it from local stores. Local stores might not cary a small title (or only 1 copy, etc), but if they have people asking for it, they are more likely to order more copies. Even if they special order 1 or 2 copies, they might get an extra to sit out on display.
