Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft signs up ZTE for its latest Android patent license deal

Neowin

Over the past couple of years, Microsoft has been making patent license agreements with many hardware companies that sell devices using Google's Android OS. Today, Microsoft made its latest deal official, this time with the large Chinese-based company ZTE.

While the press release has yet to appear on Microsoft's website, Cnet.com reports that today's patent deal between Microsoft and ZTE covers both Android and Chrome OS products. While specifics about the agreement were not announced, it's likely that ZTE will pay Microsoft a percentage of every hardware product it sells with Android and Chrome.

Microsoft just signed a similar deal with Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn, last week. Microsoft says that 80 percent of the Android smartphones sold in the U.S. are now covered by agreements with the company, along with a majority of Android devices sold worldwide.

ZTE has already worked with Microsoft in developing Windows Phone devices such as the ZTE Render. The company also made a Windows 8 tablet, the ZTE V98, that was first announced in 2012 and was finally released in early 2013.

The two biggest holdouts in signing Android patent license deals with Microsoft are Huawei and Motorola, the latter of which is now owned by Google.

Already started.

Andorid wasnt even mentioned in the S4 launch... Smasung will launch their OS later this year probably and gradually move away completely.

I doubt it.
Samsung made so much money with Android devices and I don't think they want to risk that.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Given the patents MS is claiming against I wonder if Tizen will get Samsung off the hook.

The interesting thing is, you can't patent software here, so in theory no one has to pay MS anything for Android phones sold here. I bet they do though.

Android apps will work on the samsung OS I believe.

This will be hard to accomplish. RIM offers android-app-support, too, but sometimes it is painfully slow. The wrapper to do so will be very hefty for smartphones.

Tizen, the mobile operating system being developed by Samsung and Intel, can support programs written with Samsung’s Bada SDK as well as Android applications, The Handheld Blog reported. The operating system supports a program called Application Compatibility Layer (ACL), which is similar to Research in Motion’s Android player for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Open Mobile, the company behind ACL, claims Android apps will be able to run on a Tizen-powered device with 100% compatibility and feature the same responsiveness users would expect on a native Android device. The company hopes that the program will be integrated into smartphones and tablets by vendors and not end users. A video demonstration of Android apps running on a Tizen tablet follows below.

thanks for the info but i know how it runs on rim-os and thus i will wait and see how it will really perform ;) but nonetheless interesting read - i thought tizen was already dead after all these renamings...

People really overestimate Android as a reason to buy a certain phone.. if you look at the apps download numbers and web usage statistics its pretty clear that people want a smartphone and ow it has android, thats nice.. they don't really choose for android.. compare that to Apple and iOS where their users are really choosing iOS and actually using it.. here is tizen in action:

I think 90% of the samsung users would be fine if this was the os instead of android..
