Forums - Nintendo - Destroying your childhood, Episode 1: Super Mario World

I'll be sure to link HappyDolphin here when he gets back from his ban.

As for myself, I don't deny anything you'd stated but I replayed Super Mario World when it was release on the Wii's Virtual Console and I still had as much fun with it as back when I first got it. Searching for hidden exits was really fun, ghost houses were a nice addition, I loved flying from beginning to end of a level with the cape (even though it's cheap as hell), the special world provided some tough challenges, the different Yoshis made up for the lack of power ups.

That's not to say I think the "New ..." series are cheap cash-ins without soul but I still prefer SMW to this day.

WTF is that? I never played this level.

That's the hacked game. Not the real game... lol

You should have ignored the fact that Super Mario Bros: Lost Levels is included. That game alone destroy every single modern (and old) mario game in terms of challenge and fun.

Nothing new to me, I always thought it was way inferior than SMB3. And yeah, I actually think the linear, action-oriented Sonic the Hedgehog is a better game overall.

The first 4 sonic games ( 1 CD 2 3&K) are collectively better than first 4 Mario games. Sonic got better each game while Mario kept falling slightly then coming back. SMB>SMB2 ( any version)<SMW

SMB 3 beats all of the pretty much, including the Sonic games.  SMB 2 is actually another game adopted to Mario.  Lost Levels is the original SMB2.

While I agree with the second part of your comment (Sonic getting better, Mario getting worse), it's unfair to compare NES games to Genesis games, which ultimately wouldn't have existed without Super Mario as inspiration.

I prefer SMW to the New Marios mainly because of the exploration aspect in SMW. The world map is really well designed creating a non-linear experience.

Also the music of SMW is better.

Everything in the new marios is more generic and formulaic: the world map, the graphics and the music.

Lost Levels is actually the closest thing to a cash-in a Mario game ever got. They added poisoned mushrooms, made new levels but everything else was the same.

Yes comparing 16 to 8 bit games puts the 8bit games to a distinct disadvantage.  Of course, with Sonic, 16 bit was better than everything else that followed.  Sonic didn't translate.  Mario has though.

SMB2 is really Doki Doki Panic. I aready alluded to that by say (any version). And no while SMB3 is definitely the defacto Mario classic it cannot stop Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Its okay though, most of the SNES/SEGA platformers cant.
