The first 4 sonic games ( 1 CD 2 3&K) are collectively better than first 4 Mario games. Sonic got better each game while Mario kept falling slightly then coming back. SMB>SMB2 ( any version)<SMW

 

While I agree with the second part of your comment (Sonic getting better, Mario getting worse), it's unfair to compare NES games to Genesis games, which ultimately wouldn't have existed without Super Mario as inspiration.
