Forums - Gaming - X360, PS3, Wii Breakdown of how well each genre sells on each platform (Ton of Data)

If golf is considered a sport, the Tiger Woods games have a good chance to be in the table.

5. No, he didn't forget them, they're the "Sid Meier's" entries in his 360/PS3 tables.

6. Nope, "The Sims" is not strategy, it's - ta da, surprise! - a simulation game.

The problem with all the missing genre and subgenre categorizations and the resuting discussions in threaads like this is that ioi never cared about correct genres in his databases in the first place. He didn't really care about correct genres (or more subgenre diversifation) on VGC, he doesn't care on gamewise.

@5, you're correct, my bad.  And you've just made me spot another error.  Overlord is included on his 360 list but not his PS3 list despite it selling 350k on PS3 (i.e. higher than C&C and XCOM).

He also decided to not include Tiger Woods in sports (sold more than 4 million on each system) and omitted the entire simulation genre which was pretty successful especially on Wii with Animal Crossing, Cooking Mama, Endless Ocean and The Sims/MySims.

But does it matter anyway? He decided to include only the top 5 of each selected genre on each system which results in the usual comparison of the biggest franchises.

NOt on purpose.  Things I missed.  I will update in a bit with Tiger Woods, Overlord, and Socom.

I normally at least try to take him up on these things.  This isn't the first time he's made one of these kind of threads only for things to be a bit off.  His effort is decent but he needs to beta test these things before he tries to pull any analysis from them.

But I guess you're right.

Platform Top 5 Total Total Software Top 5 of Complete Library %
X360 448.64m 754.49m 59.46%
PS3 379.69m 658.13m 57.69%
Wii 391.56m 842.89m 46.45%

It doesn't really make sense to exclude Wii Sports and Kinect Adventures but still count them towards the total software.

Hello again Jay.  I'll keep my critique of this as short as possible:

1. I too question your inclusion of digital sales into this.  I see you justified it by saying "if we know digital sales, why not?"  Well, a whole load of reasons why not.  But anyway, if we're including digital sales then I presume you searched every single game in every single one of these series on google to check if there was any digital sales data for them.  Failing that, I'd hope that you checked PSN/XBL to see how many ratings each game had and added this number to the total.

(I am joking, of course.  But I'm just trying to demonstrate what a can of worms you can open by including digital sales while using numbers from a site that tracks only physical sales.  One or the other would be what I'd suggest, but it's your call)

2. Souls isn't a WRPG series.  It's made in Japan.  It's a JRPG if anything.

3. Your F1 number for PS3 is wrong.  You've got it at 3.13m, but the figure should be 3.74m, you're forgetting Formula One Championship Edition (I only know this game because Psygnosis developed it, to be fair).

4.  The two PS3 SOCOM games have sold more than the Army of Two series (for this week at least :P)

5.  The Atelier games for PS3 have sold more than Disgaea.

5.  You're forgetting Civilization Revolution for both PS3 & 360 'strategy' lists.

6.  Also, what would you class "The Sims" series as?  I'd consider it a strategy.  And if you did too, then it would make revisions to all three of these lists.

7.  Finally, if I'm being really fussy, I think it would be a good idea to include how many games are counted towards each of these numbers.  You know, so when you see the difference between say - C&C on 360 and on PS3, you realise it's because it's 1 game vs. 3.  But that's probably too much work.

Nevertheless, quite a good effort.

1.  If people can find information that will change any of the above on digital then send it to me.  I used what I had available to me.

2. Souls is a WRPG made by a japanese developer.  WRPG is a genre not a region.

3.  I will update F1

4. i will also replace Army of Two with Socom.  It is a 30k difference but none the less I will change it.

5.  Will replcae Digaea with Atelier

6.  I may do the simulation genre if there is enough of them although i doubt there is.  My goal was to represent a big percentage of the games and seeeing as how i managed to includ over 50% of all sales in this thread I feel i did that.  It is not a competition but as I said I will add simulation if there enough games.

7.  Once again this is not a competition.  people who are viewing as such I will not change things just so one group of people can feel better than the other.

@ Your last comment....Wow.  This took me about 3-5 hours to put all this together.  I have not seen someone do this so if there is a few mistakes then fine, i will fix them.  Most people who has said anything has nit picked genres which is redundant.  You brought forth things that was wrong and I will fix them.  i dont claim to be perfect and I will update errors but no reason to criticise something I doubt anybody would have taken the time to do in the first place.  I gave no analysis in the first place.  Just data

Which part of saying it was a good effort did you interpret as criticism?

P.S. Regarding WRPGs v. JRPGs, the clue is in the title.  Look up their definitions on Wikipedia for more of what I'm talking about.

Yes, and I stand by that comment.  If you're going to do something, do it property.  Especially if the majority of people are going to read this thread in the first few hours.  It's not like it's going to hurt anyone to get a second opinion.

I'm not saying you didn't put lots of effort in, I'm saying that because you put so much effort in, surely you want the data to be as accurate as possible?
