Some people seem to confuse past statements. PS3 back then was compared to PS2 because it sold far less than its predecessor, that´s why people said it underperformed. What did PS2 sell in 6-7 years? 130m-140m? Compare it to todays PS3 userbase (6-7 years = 75m) and you understand what the topic actually was about.

That PS3 would outsell X360 was a widespread consent early on, it is actually quite more surprising that even after 6 years PS3 didn´t achieve this yet.

PS2 sold around 103 mn in 6 years whereas PS3 stands at 75 mn. This puts the console close to 25 million sales behind it's predecessor. It definitely hasn't underperformed concerning the competition it faced from other consoles this gen. Not to mention PS3's current consistency as the no.2 selling video game console(1st if  excluding handhelds). The peak towards end of 2009 and the console's subsequent recovery from declining sales is what the OP deliberately fails to signify with the topic but then the issue of not surpassing 360 this far is being mixed here. Isn't the OP trying to confuse the people here?

So the comeback has been made. Let's be clear on that and leave the sales surpassing thing as a separate subject.

I think you've missed the whole point of the OP.

OP is not being a fanboy trying to paint a negative picture of the PS3, it sounds like that is your interpretation. No need to be so defensive here, he's simply saying there wasn't a comeback, because it was already doing well - not that it's still doing badly lol.

On another note.

OP brilliant update much respect, there's really not much anyone can say and it would be nice if the people who disagreed with you came forward and posted their congratulations in your conduct and clarity in showing that no comeback was made and that they were wrong and pay some respect to your research.

The title before the update created a confusion and made me interpret so. Now that it is clear, I take back what I wrote about OP.

Well I guess the danger of only reading the title... You really should have read the entire OP before commenting it; but I'm glad the title is a little more... explaining now.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I remember when aligning launch was a bad thing when the ps3 was far behind the xbo360, pro Sony people would claim what the op is saying and the xbox fans would claim that aligning launch is dumb

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I love how PS3 is a failure and yet it sold almost 75 million. Just because we don't have a 75% market share we are a failure. that is so dumb.

People know it had a come back. If Xbox came out a year earlier then PS3 and has almost lost it's lead despite the poor PS3 sales before the slim came out, then surely that is a turn around.

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

'When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called the people's stick'- Mikhail Bakunin

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I would think that it would be pretty obvious that the PS3 could not have closed an 8 million or so gap without consistently outselling the 360.

I think Microsoft did well in emerging as a strong competitor in the console market, Nintendo succeeded in capitalizing on a new market (motion-controlled games) and a world that was still in transition from SD to HD, and Sony managed to finish the strongest during much of the latter half of the generation.

I personally hope that the next generation stays as competitive because it usually means that we consumers will get better products as a result.

Indeed, that's the whole irony pointed this out earlier.

Which part of the OP or anyone elses' posts is this a reply to? Nobody is saying the PS3 is a failure but they are saying it hasn't made a comeback.

Please look at the graphs, they show a slow start and building up over time, those graphs don't show a "comeback", they show an improvement.

Who is saying it's a failure? Is that what you take away from the OP you need to read it again because you clearly missed the point.

Couldn't agree more! The industry needs competition, but personally I have a hard time seeing Wii U competing with PS720... I think Nintendo should try to make Wii U the second system - but that's whole different thread ^^

sales = consistently progressive
pr / attitude towards the ps3 = comeback over the past 4 years

there, solved your confusion over the ps3's comeback - in order to maintain its sales the machine had to make a comeback in 'the hearts and minds' of potential customers, and the sales data shows that it made this comeback by maintaining a steady climb despite the initial frosty 2 year attitude towards the system when only sony diehards or those with money to burn were buying it.

Right now attitudes toward the WiiU are frosty and sales would seemingly be bad because of lack of games but aligning wiiu launch with the 360 and ps3 shows it isnt actually doing that bad, yet when nintendo release a bunch of games and said games sell well, just like any other console after a major game reease hardware sales will spike a certain degree and the general mood of doom toward the console will change (hopefully), in that regard the WiiU would make a comeback, changing peoples attitudes towards it and watching the sales steadily climb, and thats exactly what the ps3 did despite its market position, price, 'ps3 has no gaems' meme and other stuff, so that should answer your question, focusing on sales data alone does not give you the whole picture.
