I would think that it would be pretty obvious that the PS3 could not have closed an 8 million or so gap without consistently outselling the 360.
I think Microsoft did well in emerging as a strong competitor in the console market, Nintendo succeeded in capitalizing on a new market (motion-controlled games) and a world that was still in transition from SD to HD, and Sony managed to finish the strongest during much of the latter half of the generation.
I personally hope that the next generation stays as competitive because it usually means that we consumers will get better products as a result.
