It had some peaks and troughs in sales... Can we also say that the Xbox 360 makes a massive comeback every year during the Holidays? What about the Xbox 360's comeback in 2010? I wouldn't bother saying the Xbox 360 had a comeback either. Neither did anything incredible. The sales were shite because it was overpriced. You start selling something for less and it's sales will increase, shock horror, what a surprise! |
I wouldnt say the 360 made a comeback because once Black Friday happens in America thats it the 360 is dirt cheap and very affordable. The PS3 had beaten the 360 for most of the year until fourth quarter for quite a while now. Microsofts fourth quarter marketing in America is stellar.

Third to first is a comeback... it will happen.

I agree there are discrepancies there, but when you consider that the SNES came two years late, didn't have the additional selling point of being an amazingly priced optical media player and the fact that the PS3 may not outsell the 360 by as many units as the SNES vs Genesis (it certainly won't outsell the Wii by that much, no matter what Ethomaz says), I believe it's fair to hold the PS3 and SNES to the same comeback standard. |
Well, I think the PS3 will outsell the 360 by more than ~9.1M, what the SNES did against the Genesis, but we'll have to wait and see. I do have to concede that there are some similarities, especially when comparing PS3/SNES to 360/Genesis. Coming out later than the competition is the one that sticks out the most. There best territories were similar, as well. Japan didn't really give the Genesis much of a chance, with it being one of the SNES's strongest territories. They both did alright in EU, with the SNES still having an advantage (not as much as the PS3 has gained on the 360, though). And in NA, the Genesis was able to stay ahead, but because the SNES performed better late in the gen, as well as staying on the market slightly longer, the gap wasn't so large.
Of course, as you said, the discrepancies are there. When the SNES launched in NA, Sega dropped the price of the Genesis to $149, for a difference of $50. That's still only $74 by 2006 standards, $126 less than the gap between the PS3 and the 360. It was also only launched at $295, when adjusted for 2006 inflation, $200 cheaper than the PS3. SNES didn't receive poor ports for the first 2 years, either. In fact, many ports for the SNES were considered superior to their Genesis counterparts. They also secured timed exclusivity for some of Capcom's arcade ports, Street Fighter 2 probably being one of the more popular ones.
I do wish we had a break down of yearly sales for the time. While I know they both battled it out for 1st in NA, with EU being so close and Nintendo having such an advantage in Japan (17.17M vs 3.58M), there probably wasn't any doubt the SNES would eventually pass the Genesis, like there was for the PS3 at the end of 2008 and in 2010/2011 (first 2 years of Kinect). I know I never came across countless articles from gaming journalists about how it was destined to fail or contribute to Nintendo exiting the console market. Which brings me to the "console war." I truly believe the main reason the console wars seemed so heated back then was because Sega not only encouraged it, but also played a hand in it. Of course, it didn't change how most felt about the SNES, nor stop it from selling close to the same amount the Genesis did in NA. So again, not exactly the same situation.
Anyway, I suppose we'll have to agree on some points, but not the whole statement, and call it a day. I've believe exhausted enough mental energy on this topic. Or at least until the PS3 officially passes the 360 and (MAYBE) the Wii.

I'll be rooting for it.
It's going from a fairly distant 3rd place to 2nd. I'd call that a comeback.
It's going from a $600 console with "no games" to a $250 console with all major 3rd party and top of the line 1st party support.(2012 doesn't count) On top of this its the #1 selling console each week by a good amount.
