Sony Offers Blu-ray Rebate to German HD DVD Owners

In the latest advertisement from German retailer Saturn, Sony is offering 150 Euros off the purchase of a Sony BDP-S300 when current HD DVD owners turn in their used players. This is an outstanding deal for those high definition fans in Germany who would otherwise have been left with a very expensive paperweight. Currently this offer is only available in Germany.

                                                                 

 

Admittedly, the Sony BDP-S300 is more expensive in Germany at 499 Euros ($737), so this offer brings the player down to a more familiar price of around $500. Even so, I'm sure there are plenty of people in US who would love to take advantage of a similar deal. Unfortunately for them, HD DVD adoption is much higher in the US, meaning a similar plan here would cost Sony hundreds of millions of dollars to execute. In other words, don't hold your breath.

Good job Sony, give all the people who actually thought HD-DVD had a chance, an oppurtunity to make the right choice.

but sadly, there isn't anything Toshiba can do at this point, so they had to take the bitch-slap Sony just dished out.

Kinda make me pity them.

How much is BDP-S300? And it's not a bad deal, you won't be able to sell your HD-DVD player for 150 anywhere else after this.

I was under the impression that this was a store-only offer, not one from Sony.

We're not exactly sure what German retailer Saturn plans to do with any HD DVD players that are surrendered as folks waltz in to take advantage of its latest offer, but we suppose the refurbished section could receive a boost in inventory if nothing else. Judging by a recent flier from the store, it's offering consumers a €150 ($221) discount on Sony's BDP-S300 -- which is overpriced at €499 ($734) -- if they trade their HD DVD player in at the time of purchase. Also of note, we can't seem to find if there's any fine print about what HD DVD players are acceptable, but it is certain that this deal is only available overseas at the moment. Not a bad idea to get customers to jump ship, though.

What is sony going to do with those players? You think they will keep them for when toshiba signs on blu-ray they can be like "heres you hd-dvd players you can convert them to blu-rays"

that makes sense... if it were sony they would probablly discount the ps3... damn sony should do that.
