As a gamer, you expect a certain level of presentation but graphics don't have to be the most cutting edge or realistic or unique artistically in order to make me pick up a game. Most games that get popular don't even have the best graphics of their genre initially, it is just that something they do that draws others into the franchise.

BTW, about split screen, the 7th gen was one of the biggest jumps in graphical performance between gens. If split screen gaming has been removed from games nowdays, it's not because of the weakness of the machinery, it's because of the way the market has shifted. Nowadays people play online, or devs are just too lazy to make a solid split screen setting. After all Mario/Party/Kart has featured 4 player split screen since the N64 days, and the Wii is the weakest system at the moment.

The masses is everybody. Even the graphic whores have games in their collection that aren't visually amazing. For the most part, graphics whores are just some people who want software with cutting edge graphics that shows their platform is the best and most powerful!

In regards to split screen. Limitations of the hardware is a big part of the problem. A lot of games have two player split screen, but 4 players is too demanding without lowering the visual quality. Halo 4 is one of few modern shooters with 4 player split screen, but it scales down the visuals for more screens and you still get a choppy frame rate sometimes.

Well then we agree about graphics.

About Split screen, I think lowering the resolution, and quality was always the way that 4 player split screen was done. Goldeneye looks a lot more choppy in 4 player mode then it does in single player.

Devs just got too lazy to make a reduced resolution 4-player split screen mod. Even Halo, in 2 player split screen, there are large black margins on the side of the screen. 343/Bungie were too lazy to fiddle with the display of the game to make a widescreen view from each players perspective to fill the tv screen.

I think the reason why split screen isn't really seen before is not because of graphical limitations. It's because a) devs are graphic whores and they want their games to continue to look good, and b) shift to online gameplay, a lot of devs just figures people don't play 4 player offline co-op anymore.

I should have asked if people are buying a PS4 because of the graphical jump or because of the games, but right now PS4 has almost nothing for it IMO.

lol what was the point of stating the ps4 doesn't interest you?...

personally i'm hyped for killzone sf, infamous ss and drive club so far

thats a 3:1 ratio of games that i find interesting between the wii u and ps4... even though the wii u has been out for months now

I didn't say PS4 doesn't interest me, I will eventually get one, but not for the small graphical jump, or the 1 curently announced game that interests me (InFamous). I know PS4 will get better games down the road, and I'm sure more people interested in the PS4 know that too, and that's why they are interested.

Killzone is nice and all, but the few announced PS4 games are not as hyped as The Last of Us and Beyond, so if we were to judge why PS4 is hyped, it's not for software, since PS3 has better stuff coming in then ear window.

---

As for Wii U ATM there are more high profile exclusives announced for it, so there should be more hype, but there isn't. If anything people on this forum as equally hyped for both consoles, but the hype isn't split proportionatly for the amount of games announced. PS4, IMO, is getting hyped because of the unannounced, or not shown games which will eventually come out for it. PS3 had a lot of 3rd party support, and PS4 will get the same.

Gameplay > Graphics.

But then again you won't be happy paying 40$ for a game that looks like a NES game. They should worry about graphics but never put them over Gameplay or History.

++Aesthetics I +Graphics

^and you got yourself a good game.

If they made the effort to reduce the quality for each split screen that could take care of that problem. But maybe we're oversimplifying the process of scaling down visuals for more split screens.

For what its worth. This gen we've atleast seen a good numbers of games have split screen for the campaign. Not just for competitive multiplayer. That was pretty rare last gen.

Yes, co-op has been amazing this year, I don't think I beat a single Halo or Gears of War in single player. However I miss 2 player Grand Prix mode in Mario Kart (2 player co-op). I can't play MK alone, so I have absolutly nothing unlocked on MKWii.

Last gen we didn't have as many shooters, that's why there was less co-op.

my point was only that not everyone shares your opinion on games

so to say "right now PS4 has almost nothing for it IMO." is simply your opinion

i'm more hyped for killzone sf than anything nintendo has shown recently for example

First of all, I never said PS4 has no games. I said it has "almost nothing", and  "the few announced" games for it. From what I read it's only 3 exclusives atm.

I understand that people have different tastes in games, but even so there are only a handful of announced exclusives for the PS4, and none of them are high volume IP's (Killzone and InFamous have never sold above 3 million units per game).

So whatever hype there is for PS4, is in most cases, not for the games, but the console itself. You probably represent a minority interested in the PS4 specifically for Killzone.

Hence my statement is valid, but are people interested in the PS4 for the graphical jump, or the games?

P.S. Which is it for you? Is it Killzone because of the game which makes you want a PS4, or Killzone because of the graphics?

Graphics are important since they add to the immersion of the game. Games with bad/dated graphics needs to compensate a ton in other areas to make up for it. Of course some games like indies are excluded. Not to mention a game with dated graphics will be alot less appealing at first glance/impression. The graphics in all games don't have to be crysis level or anything, but I do expect decent graphics. They are an important factor in which games I buy, but def not the only ones. They just appeal to me more.

just as i am with any console in general i'm interested in the ps4 for the games that i've seen announced for it ( not just for killzone but i'm interested in most of the other games i've seen as well )

" are people interested in the PS4 for the graphical jump, or the games?"

looking back at the months prior to the wii u's launch most of the discussion i saw was about its power, about how it would demonstrate a considerable leap over the ps3 and 360

and that's natural for any console to be interested in what advancements in technology it provides
