Forums - Sales - PS3 should overtake 360 outside of US next month

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of people who criticize Sony's gaming strategy when they have sold more home consoles in 13 years than Nintendo have in 30. How on earth can you criticize their lack of business sense when the 8 year old PS2 is outselling the 360 so far this year?

Smart people do stupid things the same way smart companies do stupid things. You can be a catholic priest but if you touch an alter boy in his "naughty place" you go to jail.

Past victories and accomplishments simply do not make you immune to future mistakes and using them as a defense is a laughably weak argument that really only fools someone who wants to believe it in the first place and Sony has without any doubt made some absolutely terrible decisions this generation. Thats is the fact of the matter and you can spin it any way you like but it will still be a true statement.

With that said I agree with the rest of your post. The PS3 has gotten a lot healthier over the last couple of months and its far from dead in the water. But it also needs to continue showing strength if it wants to catch the 360.

The fact is that this is only the beginning of the PS3's run towards a comeback because the week before the PS3 launched the 360 was at 5.2m WW. Here we are 14 months later and the PS3 is behind by 7.1m a gap which has gotten smaller by 100k from the beginning of october when the gap was at 7.2m. So the gap has actually gotten larger since launch. There are of course several reasons (but not excuses) for that, one of which was its staggered launch.

So yes the PS3 is improving its numbers and its situation but no Sony is nowhere near deserving a free pass for the mistakes of this generation. If anything the past sales success of the PS1 and PS2 in contrast to the sales of the PS3 should highlight the mistakes made, not wash them away.

@topic,

Here is a better way to do this comparison so that you don't have people jumping on you about the reasons it is the way it is:

 JapanOtherTotal
360 564,337 5,422,045 5,986,382
PS3 1,829,771 4,008,280
5,838,051

This way people can see whats up with Japan and nobody feels like you're trying to give the wrong impression etc...Its all sorta nitpicky but its best not to give folks a reason to pick at it if you can help it.

The comparison is still very interesting imo because it means that soon the PS3 will be getting a boost from the rest of the World in tackling the fortified sanctuary of the US that the 360 has built up. Its going to need a boost from all territories to start pushing into that lead. Even the Wii craze is having an uphill battle towards that goal.

Yeah.  It's interesting in that it's kinda like a game of risk or something looking at it that way.

Or like the PS3 is the plucky progtagnist in an SRPG.  Having their homeland and using it's advantage to take out occupied territory before going after their opponents homeland.

I say the PS3 and 360 Sales are statistically even with regards to US/Others. There's a 20k swing either one way or another.

HOWEVER, the 360 is just getting hammered in Japan. That's where they are losing big time.

total life time sales number. That's not bad. I'm still counting down the moment when PS3 overtake xbox overall sales in "Others"

probably this summer.

How will that happen?  At the current rate it will take 71 weeks to overtake the 360 in "Others".

sorry for double post

ok, so PS3 Japan+others is nearing 360 japan+others. BUT 360 NA is > PS3 WW!!

@ssj12, PS3 is NOT going to pass the 360 WW anytime soon. 2009 is the earliest. PS3 may never pass 360 in NA.

Considering the 360 has a 7 million lead WW and the PS3 is only selling approx 20K per week more than the 360 the PS3 will take forever to overtake the 360 WW if at all.

Sony need to get their act together and fast in NA to truely come 2nd in this race, cos 2nd place WW aint the same if you aint 2nd place in NA too.

I am largely platform agnostic. I fail to understand why some people get overly fanboyish about what is an inanimate piece of electronics that's obsolete even before it's launched, when there are far more important things to champion, such as preventing environmental destruction or preventing millions of people dying unnecessarily from illnesses. This fact however, doesn’t mean I am not someone who doesn’t enjoy gaming as a pastime (as I have done for the last 20 years) or doesn’t have a strong interest in how the market is evolving – hence my presence on this site.

Platforms owned – PC, DS, X-Box 360, PS3, PSP and Wii.

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Also, the PS3 is almost 1 million units ahead of the 360 for the same amount of time since launch.

Hey, look at this! "Yeah, that's pretty cool. Also, the XBox 360 is almost 500,000 units ahead of the PS3 for the same amount of time since launch."

Isn't skewed statistical analysis fun?

Worst. Analogy. Ever.

a.) The clergy has traditionally been a dumping ground for those not intelligent enough to pursue further education. Much like the army.

b.) Pedophilia or pederasty are in no way related to intellect. See Oscar Wilde.

@ akuma587

Tru dat.

Well, my brother's a priest and I'm willing to bet that he's much, much smarter than you...

BTW, he holds two Master's degrees. What have you got?
