Forums - Sony - What the heck is God of War: Ascension's multiplayer?!?!?

 

I'm asking because I'm really not sure. For those that haven't played the attacks are:

  • square-light attack
  • triangle-heavy attack
  • circle-physical attack, kicking or picked up weapon
  • square hold-special light attack
  • triangle hold-special heavy attack
  • L1-block
  • L1+X-parry
  • L1+square-super light attack, with cool down
  • L1+triangle-super heavy attack, with cool down
  • L2-item, used  to escape enemy combos, with cool down
  • R1-grapple, can only be used at certain times of combat, great for comboing
  • R2-magic, must be replenished at "magic stations"
  • Right analog-evade
  • L3-sprint
  • L3+R3-rage mode, with a long cool down

Instead of having some 20 odd characters, the game has 4 expandable ones (one for each god). From there it is up to you to select weapons, armor, magic, items, etc. By leveling up you unlock new items and the items themselves become better.

In the very small 2v2 maps like this:

It's pretty much a 3D fighter, right? Slightly less attack options then most fighters but still very much the best way to describe it. Players can be kicked/hit off.

However what about a map like this?

In these 8 player Favor of the gods maps there is so much more to do than just fight. By getting chests and capturing alters it is possible to be the best player without ever even killing someone. In addition these levels add traps and interactive objectives such as killing that big thing.

So really how do we define this type of game? Is it just a fresh take on fighters or is it something new? What name would you use to describe it? I'm leaning towards "3D platform action brawler." Or if this isn't that original, list similar games.

For all of those big 2D fighter dudes out there, what's your stance on the depth of combat?

It's my favorite MP mode in awhile (I almost NEVER play online MP) simply because it's something fresh. I think "3D platform action brawler" is a good description. There really aren't any comparable games in my recollection and the fact that this is SSM's first competitive MP game makes the feat even more impressive. Looking forward to DLC since I got CE with the season pass.

I think in one of the playstation blog videos they said they were influenced by Power Stone.. Which is good cause Power Stone is awesome..

It's brilliant! Very different and refreshing! I was sceptical about MP being added but it truly is fun!

Ha yeh it is a little like powerstone actually, clearly not a copy thing but I can see the comparison from the way you view a stage. Powerstone 2 is amazing

I have a question: does this multiplayer is like Anarchy Reigns'? Everything you said is almost equal to that game, so yeah then, Ascension is a pretty awesome multiplayer.

From the 2 second youtube clip I watched, kinda but not really...



Closest it has in similarities is Power Stone. That said the combat is awesome

It has a lot of depth too. Here's how I see it

First off we have the three weapon types

Swords: Fast and precise attacks. Best at 1vs1 moments

Hammers: Heavy attacks with a great crowd control component. Great for stage knockouts and setting up for arial attacks. but much slower compared to swords

Spear: Great for fast attacks, setting up for arial attacks (not as good as hammers) and absolutely fantastic for support attacks

Then we have the different weapons in each category

Each weapon have different strengths and weaknesses. Some are more melee based while others are magic based. Each weapon has different combos unique to them.

Weapons are very unique too..SSM has not been lazy about this. For example Titan blade attacks are fast and if done right can be great when fighting several enemies. The electric pattern you embed on the ground is great!

My personal favorite is the Athena blade. I like how it has a regenerative attack attached to the L1+ triangle move. but it's hard to use against opponents. But the L1+ Triangle is great and I have a easy combo to use with it

Overall absolutely amazing MP experience. My ONE big complaint is (and I have had made this complaint here, on gaf, on the godofwar forums lol)...people STILL can't join a game mid-game. So for example in a 4vs4 match...if one guy quits the game when it starts then it becomes really hard to win..can be so damn frustrating

 

ps: I didn't even mention the magical attacks, items etc. It's like a RPG of sorts lol so many damn option and you need to be smart in how you approach it
