Forums - Sony - Shovelware moves consoles. How Sony can sell more PS Vitas.

I think this is backwards.  A console that sells gets shovelware.  Shovelware isn't what causes a console to sell.

Who are you kidding?  Didn't you know the NES sold so well because there were so many shitty games on it?  Just check out the Atari 2600.  There is no way that led to the video game crash.

Yeah!  We all know that the 2600 was a HUGE success because the likes of the alpha Pac Man that hit the shelves and also ET!

LJN was what made the NES!  That and titles like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde!

The 3DS launch didn't have many good games. And by good, I mean "okay" games. Before the price drop the 3DS had plenty of actual shovelware titles as filler. The 3DS sold (more than the Vita.)  A massive amount of shovelware hit after the price drop and still few games really worth getting the system for. The system sells a truck load.

The end of 2011 and the 3DS actually gets games that can be considered pretty good, and then early 2012. Then nothing but shovelware up until holiday 2012, early 2013.

Shovelware gives the perception of the console having a lot of games. The fact that most people aren't going to play every game really makes the games they are going to play stand out. Or in the 3DS case, the early shovelware made the so-so games stand out so people bought those to have something atleast playable until something good came out.

Now, Nintendo's strategy seems the best to follow! REALY

PSP sold so well because of emulators. I'm sticking to this defense after seeing PSP's SW sales.  How else do explain a hand held that sold almost 80m in HW and doesn't even have one 10m seller?

I highly doubt PSV trumps 3DS in quality software.  Compare 3DS retail and eshop titles to PSV retail and eshop.  I believe 3DS trumps PSV.  PSV has some good games but apparently not too many people are noticing.

I'd argue no PSP game sold 10 million units because the PSP lacked killer apps capable of achieving those numbers. The only games we see achieving those numbers on handheld platforms have massive casual appeal.

Few console IPs even achieve 10 million sales. That's a dumb argument.

You really should take a look at what games actually sell. In Japan for example a praised quality game like Luigi´s Mansion has been number one for weeks now. PSVs problem is that Sony isn´t supporting the system decently anymore, they had a decent start but after that their support really slowed down considerably. Actually that´s no surprise since they shut down 3 of their own studios that worked on PSV titles last year, for example Studio Liverpool, the guys responsible for the Wipeout series.

The release schedule of 1st and 2nd party software on PSV is really in a dire situation and that´s the bigger problem than shovelware no one cares about which is cheaply available on smartphones anyway.

Just another example of trying to downplay the 3DS strong points and success by saying But! Vitas games are better quality! Yeah... In your opinion. The ONLY games I own for 3DS are Mario Kart, NSMB2, Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus: Uprising, LoZ: OoT, Prof Layton and the Miracle Mask and Luigis Mansion 2. In my own opinion, these games are fantastic and have warranted me buying both a regular and XL version because I also get the luxury of playing DS and old Gameboy games on the device via the VC. Bash the specs all you want, but in most every other way that has nothing to do with power and graphics, (in my opinion!!!) 3DS trumps Vita in every way.

Multiple GT games have sold over 10M and the PSP game sold 3M. If it wasn't the killer app it should have been is Sony's fault for making a Gran Turismo game without a Gran Turismo mode.

Neh.. Sony needs quality software titles aimed at girls, women and childeren.. Right now the entire Vita is aimed at young males who are also the people with the better smartphones, tablets and consoles making them actually just the people with no need to buy a Vita..

For having never seen a girl/women play a game categorized as such, I don't see your point. And for children there is Sly, CoD and little big planet.
