Forums - Sony - PlayStation 4 Developers Have Access to 7 GB RAM (Rumor)

This isn't news.  We talked about it when they first announced the 8GB of RAM.

I remember some guys saying the OS will use 2-3GB.

I saw someone reiterating over and over that he believes 4GB are for the OS, which imo can't be right as even win7 doesn't need that much while I'm encoding a 1080p file.

6gb should be enough /2gb for the system

more important is a smart loading management and streaming.
loading 7gb would need more than 5 minutes:
once fully loaded the advantage should be:no more loading times while entering buildings like in lego city

Or eliminate loading times beyond start up. Skyrim was only a 3.8gb install on 360. Even with the 5.5gb install of the ps3 version copied in memory, there's still almost 4 times the memory left that the ps3 version had available run time.

Filling 7GB with super quality textures will probably do the opposite, long long load times.
Although using 3GB for super quality textures should be enough for 1080p, and the rest can be used to keep reading data into memory in the background. Copy all the important parts in memory and accessing menus, maps, nearby inside areas can all be instant. No more hesitating before going into a door in fear of another load screen.

There a ton of things to do with more memory... even put more destructives things in FPS, or bigger maps, or more players, etc.

I would love to see a full blown huge world RTS with the from dust engine.
Actual seasons in an RPG, snow build up, avalanche damage, actual rivers, a real living landscape.

At 176GB/s?

Or you mean from Blu-ray to RAM? Even so the time is less than 1 minute to fit 7GB... more about 40 seconds.

High res textures <3 and more NPCs. Can't wait for next gen to start.

Around the Network

1. I want really improved/smart A.I. (enemies that flee for their lives when against the odds, enemies that pick up the weapons you can pick up, enemies that run out of bullets, heal themselves, etc, etc.) .

2. Randomized enemy behavior/location after player death.

3. NPCs that can be killed, and are smart, see #1.

4. Shorter loading time.

5. Greatly-improved net code for MP games.

Awesome 7 gigs is plenty...

i mean blu ray to ram not bandwith

i'm no expert but ps3 loading times are up to 40 seconds(eg some gt5 tracks)

40seconds for 512mb

now we have 16time more ram but the ps4 player is max. 3 times faster than the ps3(40sec. x 16 : 3)

i don't see how it should be possible to load 7gb in less than 4 minutes.(that's why i'm saving money for a superfast ssd-than 40seconds should be possible-but i hope i'm wrong and you are right but it sounds like a miracle to me)

GT5 load the tracks to HDD not RAM... the time is to make the swap in the HDD.

We are talking here to load the game data to RAM... not HDD.

The BD read speed is 200MB/s in PS4... the RAM speed is 176GB/s... so to load 7GB from BD to RAM is less than 1 minute... now to write in HDD is slow because the HDD 5400rpm write speed is ~30MB/s.

A single speed drive is 36Mbps, it would take about 26 minutes to fill the 7G (not counting seek times if its's not a single stream). For a good quality quad drive it takes roughly 6.5 minutes.
