Forums - Sony - Sony's FY2012 Earnings: $458m Profit (FY); 3.4m PS3+PS2 (Q4); 1.3m PSV+PSP (Q4)

Sony should post a profit based on their extensive asset selling (building + DeNa shares) and weakening yen. Their business model, excluding its Music, Film and Financial Services are losing money every quarter. I expect a loss in their gaming division due to R&D for PS4, PSVita price cut and weak sales - Sony only profited by 6 million during the holiday season.

P.S. I guess we are both in advance hahaha: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=158479&page=1#

What was the loss attributable to TV's last year?

Last year was everything merged in CPS division... the division had a 2.2 billion dollars loss in the fiscal year.

-i expect an operational loss (if you subtract the profit from selling assets, i don't get why they put that in the operational part anyway shouln't that be extrordinary profit?)

I don't know too but I used the same words found in the official documents... so they will record the sales like operation profit... only one share will be recorded like other profite.

AFAIK, under international accounting, the disposals would be exceptional items and so all you need to do is either list the sales separately on the income  statement or in the notes.

OT - they have to post a profit for this Q.

I'm wating some stufs to update the OP...

- NPD adjustments next week
- Smartphone shipments estimates from IDC

~$1.5 billion loss in the last FY... so ~$750 million loss to be posted this quarter in the TV segment if "by half" is true.

Good news but still bad for the company... they need to make the TVs at least be even.

Edit - Added your link to the OP in Analist Predictions.

If Sony didn't post profit selling 2.6 billion dollars in assets and shares then the company is doing worst than I expected.

Absolutly, that would be so sad!

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

They are on the right track

This is primarily due to cost cutting.  They have said the cost cutting is now complete.  So that particulare path is now at an end.

It is a different path they are on now as it is ALL down to increasing marketshare from now on.  I cant see TV's being profitable for years, if ever.  Thats still a massive loss for just one product line.

I think their plan is to change their focus on the type of TVs they will push going forward. Better sell few high end tvs at profit than many mid-low range tvs for a loss. Read an article recently where an exec in Sony said something similar. So I don't think it's going to be mainly about the increase in marketshare at all...maybe just the marketshare in the real high end tvs market. I believe they have said they will profit by the end of next fiscal year...don't think they will be able to be personally either.

I agree $750 million loss in one product line is still massive... not good.
