Forums - Sales - North America is becomming a bigger market, Europe a smaller, Japan's equal

A lot of people here have lately said that Europe is starting to be more important than NA hardware wise. I will also sum up what has happened between the three main territories. There will be rests from other than the 3 world markets, that is why  % won't add up.

Okay. First, last generation.

Playstation 2:

Total sales in Europe: 46,5 M (http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php)  = 38,75 %
Total sales in Japan: 22,3M (http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php)  = 18,58 %
Total sales in North America: 47M (http://vgchartz.com/aweekly.php) = 39,16 %

Gamecube:

Total sales in Europe: 4,75M (http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php?date=39110&boxartz=1) = 22.1 %
Total sales in Japan: 4.0 (http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php? date=39264&console=&maker=&disp=American+Name&boxartz=1)  =  18,6%
Total sales in North America: 12.74M (http://vgchartz.com/aweekly.php) = 59,2 %

Xbox:
Total sales in Europe: 7.76M (http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php?date=39110&boxartz=1)= 32 %
Total sales in Japn: 0.5M (http://vgchartz.com/japweekly.php?  date=38536&console=&maker=&disp=American+Name&boxartz=1) = 2 %
Total sales in North America: 15.9M (http://vgchartz.com/aweekly.php?date=39236&console=&maker=&boxartz=1) =  65,7 %

Total sales last generation:

Europe: 59.01M  =  36.6 %
Japan: 26.8M  = 16.7 %
North America: 75.64M = 46,9 %

Current generation:

Playstation 3:
Total sales in Europe: 4M = 42 %
Total sales in Japan: 1.8M = 18,9 %
Total sales in North America: 3.7M = 39 %

Nintendo Wii:
Total sales in Europe: 6.5M = 32,3 %
Total sales in Japan: 5M = 24,8 %
Total sales in North America: 8.65M  = 42,9 %

Xbox 360:
Total sales in Europe: 5.4M = 32,7 %
Total sales in Japan: 0.56M = 3,39 %
Total sales in North America: 10.6M = 64.2 %

Total sales this generation:

Europe: 15,9M = 34,2 %
Japan: 7.6M = 16.3 %
North America: 23M = 49,5 %

So to sum it up:
Europe has become 2.4 % points smaller
Japan has decreased by 0.4 % points.
North America has increased by 2.6 %

0.2 % have been rounded up or down and are therfefore, magically, gone!

Isn't PS2 still selling decent numbers? (And messing up the analysis)

This should change in favor of Europe / Others, though.

Remember:

- The Wii was supply constrained for the whole year and Europe got smaller shipments

- The Playstation 3 is currently seing increased numbers in Europe but not in the US and it is selling far better in Europe than in Japan

- The Playstation 3 launched in Europe in march, therefore Japan and the US had 3 months of sales Europe didn´t have

- The DS is currently exploding in Europe, while this explosion is "over" in the US and Japan where numbers cooled down to a more normal level

What stranne says is true, and will completely change your results. Aside from the UK, Europe does not have as high a proportion of early adopters as the US or Japan, and sales of current-gen consoles are therefore likely to increase at a higher ratio for Europe than they do for US or Japan.

You are forgetting that newer markets take up consoles more slowly. Also wealthier countries(US,Japan,UK) can absorb higher prices of new consoles. So I expect Europe will keep the PS2 going the longest. A better analysis would be to look at total hardware moved each year and examine the regional breakdown.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

Differences in % aren't big enough to state that Europe is actually shrinking because of multiple variable factors named by Louie*. So i guess one cannot state that Europe is becoming a 'smaller' market whilst America is becoming a 'bigger' one...

THE NETHERLANDS

In Europe PS2 sell a lot and it is still on the market (in the lastgen there was only 3 consoles), so "steal" share to X360/Ps3/Wii.

You should update your data of nextgen including the last year PS2 sales data ;)

What are you actually trying to say?... That Europe (mainland) is less wealthy then the US, UK or Japan?... Because that is false info your trying to spread there!

Switzerland, Netherlands, France, Luxemburg... All wealthier per inhabitant then the UK, US and Japan...

THE NETHERLANDS

I fully expect Europe to have a higher percentage this generation once it settles down.
