Forums - Nintendo - New $99.99 XBox 360 (Stingray) Coming This Fall? Implications For Wii U?

I really don`t see MS losing 100$/€ or close in profits. Specially when a new console is coming. A console that will make them lose money with every unit.

By Christmas time, Wii U will have a good line up to even do well against PS4 and Xbox 720 when they come out.
A 99 Xbox 360 is not going to harm Wii U. Most likely PS3 and Wii. And if it has a line up equal to PS4 and Xbox 720`s, than it will really slow the transition to the new consoles.

360/PS3 will be supported heavily by third parties through 2015 at least IMO. There won't be one third party who makes an exclusive big Wii U game without a PS3/360 version (see: Rayman) unless its something primarily for the Japanese market.

Too big of an audience to ignore.

ZombieU

Edit: Also, is a price cut for a dyign console really the big news here?

Assuming this rumour is true, we have seen

The price for the 720

The price of the 720's rip off subscription mode

No backwards compatability

Always online is a requirement, and that initial announcement wasn't just akin to Wii connect 24/7.

So yeah, if the rumour is false (99%), then we should discuss none of it. If the rumour is true (1%) We should be discussing whether this d00ms the 720, not the WiiU.

Xbox wont sell much more honestly, its in the final stage, top games wont be coming in 2014. Unlike WiiU, which has a bright future from 2014 on.

3rd parties will support 360 and PS3 for at least 2 more years.

Which in turn will make the Xbox 720 and PS4 an even harder sell for the mass market, only offering enhanced visuals and greater graphics with no incentive whatsoever to transtion from current gen to the next as backward compatibility will not be featured.

As 8th gen consoles continue to get major exclusives, 7th gen users will eventually buy new hardware. They all aren't expected to jump over in the first couple years.

I wonder if the the supposed 499 model will be sold at a loss or if it will be like an Elite compared to the other model

I could maybe see a new 360 model with an extra 512MB of DDR3 RAM added maybe for OS functions, much like the DSi had over the regular DS/DS Lite models. Another shrink on the chip, smaller casing, etc.

Why would they do that? The whole point is to reduce costs, not add on to them.

If this is true, I may consider picking it up for the few JRPG exclusives the Xbox has.

Well lets see here. Lets say I'm a parent. I bust my ass at work every day to provide for my family. I have some young kids, the wifey tells me to go get them a game console as a birthday/Christmas gift.

Looking at Best Buy.com for 2 minutes to see their retail prices + factoring in a $99.99 XBox 360 ... I can get

XBox 360 Console - $99.99 (lets assume this rumor is true)

Lego Star Wars Collection - $19.99

Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 - $19.99

Soul Calibur V - $19.99 (good for two boys)

Viva Pinata - $14.99

Skylanders (Starter Pack w/3 figures + base) - $74.99

Total - $250

Can't even get a basic Wii U for that.

Oh, I see. You are talking about kids' first video game system. That market isn't interested in the latest and greatest anyway, because kids break things. The only question is going to be why those parents would choose a 360 over a Wii that has the same games, plus much better substitutes for those exclusives you mentioned. Would kids rather play Viva Pinata or Mario? Does the average parent know Viva Pinata or Mario? Microsoft totally has the advantage here.

The Xbox brand is much more relevant these days than the Wii brand.

Both Sony and Microsoft have completely lost the plot if the 720's retail price is true. I can see a Wii U $50 price cut coming soon which will leave the Wii U being $250/300, the PS4 being $450/500 and the 720 being $500.

With a few more 'hardcore' Bayonetta 2-esque exclusives revealed at E3 Nintendo could make a killing.

Forget about the $99 360, the biggest news is yet more talk of always online and a ridiculous pricepoint for the 720.

We could end up seeing the Basic Wii U being half the price of the 720 and the PS4 not being too far off it as well (by my guesstimations).

PS4/720 have long-term sales potential. A high launch price point won't matter much since price cuts will ensure the consoles will keep selling for about 7-8 years just like this gen.

Microsoft will offer a $99 Xbox 360 for those looking for something cheap. They can get both the families on a budget's money and those 30-year old gamers to buy their consoles. It's the perfect strategy and the $99 will be the nail in the coffin to the Wii.

I don't think a $99 360 would affect WiiU. 360 is already cheaper now so if price is a deciding factor WiiU already loses.
It would likely trump Wii as the cheap affordable system but Wii is likely on it's last year here anyway.

Don't see how this would impact Wii U at all. After 2013 ends the only new 360 games coming out are going to be the yearly Maddens, CODs, etc. Nothing people would have bought a Wii U for, and certainly nothing in direct competition with Mario Kart or Smash Bros.
