Forums - Sony - How does the grass in The Last of Us stack up against high-end PC titles?

While grass and foliage in video games may seem like an inconspicuous thing, the tech behind rendering each blade of greenery is often considered to be one of the many forms of benchmarking a game’s technical prowess. To render each and every blade of grass in a forest can be computationally and graphically taxing and is often the first thing to be left on the cutting room floor.

We take a look at some of the hi-res screenshots from The Last of Us, courtesy ofPSMania to see how it stacks up against a few of the titles on high-end PCs and some on current gen consoles.

The Last of Us is set to release on June 14th exclusively for the PlayStation 3, just a few short months away and the game is already looking to be a contender for Game of the Year. It will have its work cut out against tough competition from the likes of BioShock: Infinite and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Hi-res screenshots taken from the demo for The Last of Us show just how eerily green the world will be post apocalypse.   While the PS3 is now over six years old, the hardware continues to impress with stunning looking visuals coming out late in the cycle that in many cases may go head-to-head with even the best of them on the PC.

TLoU –

Crysis 3 – Crytek set the benchmark in graphics on the PC, showing us how dense vegetation should look like in the first game. How does TLoU stack up against Crysis 3running on ultra high settings on a high-end PC?

The Witcher 3 – The Witcher 2 wowed everyone with its beautiful graphics on the PC when turned up to its “uber” setting. However, the game was a resource hog making for a choppy gameplay experience even on a high-end PC. The screenshots released by Game Informer shows off The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt running on CD Projekt RED’s next gen engine, RED Engine 3. The game has only been “officially” confirmed for PS4 and PC at this time.

Halo 4- While this is a current gen Xbox 360 title, this game won the Best Graphics award at the 2012 Spike VGAs, by nomination from a pool of over 30 industry veterans.

Gears of War 3 – The Gears franchise is know for its dull brown color tones, but Epic changed things up with the third game in the franchise by introducing a new color – green. The greenery was a welcome addition to the series and helped lend a football-esque romp feel to some of the mutliplayer modes.

Here are a few more hi-res images of The Last of Us, showing off its impressive character modeling to whet your appetite. The Last of Us will be launching June 14th world wide, with a planned demo to be available over PSN May 31st.

I don't like this comparison.

Comparing any PS3 title with Crysis 3 on high settings or The Witcher 3 which is a next-gen title makes no sense.

Also the pictures choosen for Halo and GOW don't make justice to the games.

It's amazing that a PS3 title CAN compare to something like Crysis 3. It's even more amazing when you realize that the PS3 is a 7 year old console!

Damn Gears 3 looks horrible lol. Maybe bland is the better word? Unreal Engine 4 can't get here soon enough.....

I've been on a media blackout for TLOU so I haven't seen any gameplay since E3 2012, but Crysis 3 seriously has the best foliage I've ever seen, sooo good looking in motion.

the last of us looks awesome for a console game but if you see the grass in crysis 3 in movements when you walk through it you see it's a whole new level with which consoles just can't compete with.

you used the worst looking halo 4 multiplayer map (because it has muddy textures) but yeah, halo looks awesome with lighting and stuff but grass was never the strongest part but it's also not linear so you can forgive it.

and i don't even remember that i ever saw grass in gears of war lol

Crysis 3 takes it by a landslide, which is expected given its running on high end PC hardware.

I think someone went out of their way to find the worst pics they could tbh.

I thinks so too, anway its best wait for a proper comparison and not some bullshit one.

Irrelevant, the fact that a 6 year old console can still push these graphics is pretty impressive. 6 years is a lifetime for technology.

I read the article on a another website. Grass comparisons? LOL. I think some people have been smoking a little too much of it.(or not enough).
