Forums - Gaming - why do a lot people dismiss online gaming so much?

For me online gaming died when all the greedy companies started to remove dedicated servers.

I loved playing online back then but now I ignore this aspect because I know I should not invest to much time because the devs will take this feature away anyways.

Its just because devs/publishers think: LETS REMOVE THE SERVERS SO THEY FEEL FORCED TO BUY OUR NEW GAME........

For me the multiplayer aspect is actually weighing to much in the reviews. I dont care about MP anymore but an okayish single player game with a great MP part distorts the rating alot! Reviewers should have seperate scores for SP and MP and then come up with a third combined rating.

I also love local multiplayer   because its just 100000x more fun than online.  Seeing your friends reactions is priceless.

Its one of those internet things. Online MP is just as popular, if not more popular than SP in this day and age. Look at the biggest franchise out there: COD. Pretty much a MP franchise.

SP is great, but MP is where things are really growing and will only get bigger.

Also im not a big fps fan and that seems to be the biggest area of online gaming, most of the time when I play games its either epic single player games like uncharted, god of war, zelda, metroid or local mp games like mario kart/smash bros that in my opinion are better played with a close group of friends

Online gaming sucks, because it's horrible for me in Luigi's Mansion 2. I am 1 out of 10 in joining a game without getting an error message. I am 1 out of 2 in completing a game as a host. In my second game everybody else had disconnected after a couple of minutes.

As for reviewers, they can't really test the online portion of a game under normal conditions. They need to finish their review before the game releases, so the best they can get is a server where they play against other reviewers/people of the development team. Therefore they'll focus on the singleplayer portion in their review, because that's the part they could test thoroughly.

Try a different game, and preferable on a console with an ethernet port. Wi-Fi is unreliable for online gaming.

I like it sometimes, but I usually never play online except for some games like Halo 4 once in a while.

A reviewer can judge single player.

A good multiplayer depends on whether the game hits off or not. If there isn't a large good community to play with online and for a "long" time, then the online sucks. A reviewer can't know this a week before release.

then there is a huge error when it comes to reviewers and how they review the game, since to they judge online and comment on it, even though the verdict is mostly dependent on the single player. if they really cant judge an online game without playing it for a long time then they should just review the single player and rate the singleplayer alone. and not judge the online player and rate it based more on their experience with the singplayer aspect

thats exactly what they do, unless its something like COD where its focused on MP. For instance Uncharted 2 was getting rave reviews but hardly anyone talked about the MP, despite it being well done. For games that are SP focused reviewers dont bother.

Sometimes the multiplayer feels tacked on and added just for the sake of it. For PR, for whatever, but it doesn't fit. Developers even add trophies based on online grinds to piss people off even more.

Now when the online is relevant and makes the game unique because of its online component, such as Guild Wars, Phantasy Star Online, etc, then it's a different story and the online mode is more than welcome...

well the game just released so there are probably some issue's with the serves. but you cant really judge online gaming based on one experience can you?

as for the reviewers part, there is a lot of truth of what you said, though thats a problem that can be avoided by not including the multiplayer aspect in the review or waiting to experience the multiplayer better before releasing the review. i undertand though how those would cause some problems

There are very few games where I find the online enjoyable.

Waiting for a game to start is annoying, load times are enough waiting already. Then you always have people that quit directly after it starts or halfway through. Plus most online games just consist of the same levels over and over again. Another problem is I like to be immersed in the sound of games. Turning the game volume down to understand what people are saying, which is mostly noise anyway, is not my preferred way to enjoy a game.

The only games I really like the online are Journey and Dark Souls.
GT5 online is ok, although it always takes a while to find a good room, more waiting before a race starts, and half the field usually drops out during the race. If I only have a little while to play I'll stick to the seasonal challenges instead.

LBP local multiplayer -> never laughed so hard.
LBP online multiplayer -> most frustrating experience.

i agree with you that it does depend on the game, and waiting for games can be annoying sometimes. ohh and just mute those mofo's down!

i do disagree with you on that there are few games that are enjoyable online. there are many games out there with great online
