1.2m Chinese killed by air pollution in 2010

Air pollution contributed to the deaths of 1.2 million people in China in 2010, according to data presented at a summit in Beijing this week.

The study, led by researchers at the University of Washington, said air pollution posed the fourth largest threat to the health of Chinese people, behind dietary risks, high blood pressure and smoking.

Air pollution is a fact of life in cities such as Beijing, where many people wear breathing masks when travelling outdoors to guard against “PM2.5 particles” – tiny pollutants that can go deep into the lungs and cause cancer, bronchitis and asthma.

that is so sad

Switch!!!

So, 0.1%.

Nothing will be done. China doesn't care about pollution - they've made this quite clear.

we have the solutions. people need to use them. the only way china will improve is if they decide to suddenly stop growing economically, or their under class has a mass uprising. I dont see either happening. They would be smart to get on nuclear power if they aren't yet.

heh, well damn sounds like they need to clean up thier act, i didnt know that counrty was so nasty...

its horrible. should look into their mining. a lot of people are pushing solar power for the enviroment, but a lot of the stuff is mined in China in some of the worst ways for the enviroment.

This sounds a bit cruel, but that is actually good in a way. The chinese population gets out of control when they dont have wars. So maybe this is a way to help that.

I am pretty sure the chinese dont care about polution quotas aswell, wich leads to this.

well, if the chinese had humane labor conditions, eco-friendly power plants, factories and mining and received an appropriate salary then we would have to pay like 3-4 times the money for smartphones/tablets/TVs/consoles/handhelds/home electronics - the horror

probably far more than that. I would be fine with it too. the chinese people should rise up and take their country back for them selves. I haven't read much on it, but what they do to their enviroment is horrible. Will be a hard place to live if it contiues

Every country which went through industrialization went through this. They have started addressing the pollution problem and made plans to tackle it, but you need to remember that it is a country of 1.3 billion population, more so than the US and Europe combined. Taking that many people out of bottom line poverty within two decades is not an easy feast and one no country has ever achieved before.

Edit: And I'm sure the numbers are heavily inflated, as in the case of every major publification in the west with their bias against China. Seriously, people still read the mainstream news nowadays?
