Forums - Sales Discussion - Will PS3 1st year= wii 1st year in sales?(europe)

that conclusion is obviously an artifact of the holiday season not lining up between the two consoles. i guess it's sort of interesting but only in the way that it allows for some serious cherry picking.

Exactly. This is an artifact of the PS3 having its first full Christmas about 9 months after launch instead of 12 months after launch.

Poor PS3 Sales Means Smaller Losses

"Actually, because the number of units sold was not as high as we hoped, the loss was better than our original expectation," Quotes from Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda.

If you "zoom in" and look at a bit over 1 year ( http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=Europe&cons2=PS3&reg2=Europe&cons3=X360&reg3=Europe&weeks=60 ) the allignment of the holiday seasons becomes a bit more clear. The PS3 may seem to come close the the Wii at 48 weeks, but then the Wii will jump to a massive holiday created lead.

It will be somewhat close, but no.

Because of the difference in launch dates, PS3 was able to catch up and pass the Wii due to the 8th and 9th month of PS3 sales being in Nov/Dec 07, versus the 8th/9th month for the Wii being July/Aug. With only Feb and Mar to go for the PS3, its sales won't be as robust as the holiday sales. Meanwhile, the equivalent sales are Oct and Nov for the Wii as it was ramping up for its 2007 holiday sales.

In terms of raw numbers, PS3 needs to go from a bit over 3.5M to 4.3M in 7 weeks. Over 100k a week, while it is just now finding its post-holiday low in sales at half that (53k). Close, but no cigar.

Still, very good for a console costing as much as it has. It will be fascinating to see how it goes on from here. One trend, though, I admit only 2 weeks old, is that both PS3 and X360 are finally flatting out. The Wii in 2 weeks is double from its post-holiday low, 62K to 120K.

Torturing the numbers.  Hear them scream.

well it is what it is. Ps3 luanch in march 07 for europe and was pretty big in sales for the first month. Wii with 2 holiday season ps3 with 1.
the sustained sales without holidays season wont match the wii. but overall both ps3 and wii out selling 360 consistantly

Since the title, and thus the thread, is only the 1 year, the Wii by definition gets only 1 holiday season as well.  Though I will admit they get the benefit of a launch during a holiday season.   But the sales of Dec. 07 doesn't help the Wii in this comparison.

You could also look at the weekly sales: http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=Europe&cons2=PS3&reg2=Europe&cons3=X360&reg3=Europe&weeks=80&weekly=1

You can see that Wii has a higher average out of holidays, and that it sold more in the holidays, so no.
