And that comparison also is meaningless. Halo 4 was a sequel with anything but minimal advertising. People were dying for it, while nobody asked for prequels to God of War and Gears. It also released before we got wind of next gen consoles from either Microsoft or Sony.

I think people do want prequels of Gears. I'd love to see games focused around E-Day and the events that lead up to Marcus going to prison which is where the Gears 1 starts. The prequel we got just tells a story about Barid. Hence, we didn't get the prequel we are "dying for."

Halo: Reach focused on something interesting, the fall of Reach which was a major event in the universe and directly leads into Halo 1.

It's still an apples-to-oranges comparison, but oh well.

Not really.  Halo has been successful regardless of prequel, without main character, genre, etc  Where as not every game can do that which includes GoW and Gears.    ALthough both will sell great in the end it just shows you how successful Halo really is.  And even if Gears and GoW would have got a lot of ads they still would not have been as good critically.

But, not a God of War nor Gears has not been successful thus far. Halo's also never been tested like the two of them were (never had a prequel released at the end of gen with minmial marketing, in Gear's case), for instance. Thus, the comparison is grasping at best.

I know people are blaming the end of the gen but i think that is a complete bs statement (Not mad here). If that was the case then Halo 4 wouldn't be at 8.07m already or how about Call of duty black Ops 2 which has already sold 21m on PS3/360.  Even assassin's Creed III is killing the numbers.

The main reason these games are not selling as well is because they are not as good as the previous games in the series, stale gameplay, and the stories was unappealing for both.  I mean really what else was there to tell with Kratos?  And  i dont think people care about Bairds story either.  They are still both selling well but when I said months ago that neither one would  break 4m and I was skeptical of them reaching 3 million people said i was wrong.

I will say congrats to both for doing well for spinoffs and prequels but other than that I don't think there is some story to not being as successful as the previous installments.

Halo 4 sold 9 thousand less than GoWA this week.  a 21 week old game compared to a 4 week game.

OK, and? Sequel vs prequel, not to mention, the former is from an 8-to-12 million selling franchise, vs one that's never sold even 5 million.

God of War III sold 5.2 million units as of May 31, 2012 according to an official report from Sony.

Shipped vs Sold.  Vgchartz tracks sold from retailers while companies tracks sold to retailers.

If you include sales of Saga, Trilogy, and bundles (my copy was free) it appears to be at 5 million.

When they released the figures Saga wasn't even released. Also it only includes the standalone title, not the trilogy.

Now that is true.

Gears of War will die down quickly, while God of War will have legs. It's amazing Playstation games are blamed for having legs due to 'low price tag' but Microsoft exclusives don't have that leg even with low price tag.

As I said earlier the report was released on May 31, 2012 when Saga wasn't even released. Also the Trilogy isn't included. Besides God of War III has never been heavily bundled so I don't see your point.

Either way those numbers you have been saying is in fact shipped and not sold from retailers.    If we went off shipped numbers every single game on this site would be higher than what they are at this exact moment.  people need to relax with throwing shipped numbers around.  We hear it every single day but vgchartz tracks sold from retailers where as companies show sold to reatilers.  their is a difference.  by the logic you are saying, we should have tomb raider at 3.4 million right now since that is how much square enix has shipped.

Then they were probably talking shipped.

I'm skeptical about most things Sony says.
