Forums - Gaming - Epic confirms: Unreal Engine 4 is NOT coming to Wii U

IGN asked him again - So while UE4 proper won't make its way onto Wii U, Rein explains that developers are capable of porting software powered by the engine. "The truth is, if a developer wanted to take an Unreal Engine game and put it on Wii U, they could," Rein continues. "Unreal Engine 3 is kicking ass on Wii U. The best games on Wii U are made on our technology. What more do you want from us?"

well we are back at december 2012, i can live with this answer.

"But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles"

While possible no developer is going to do that.

There is basically zero optimization tools built into the engine for Wii U.  So a studio wanting to port a game would have to build them all from scratch themselves, greatly increasing budget, and development time.  I dont see virtually anyone actually doing that, especially while Wii U sales for both hardware and software are so low.

Nintendo refuses to work with the specifications third parties need and they were left out. Its their fault and Cliffy B told Sony and Microsoft what specs to use. They didnt even bother with Nintendo because they knew they wouldnt listen. Anyone who didnt see this coming..sad.

Nintendos western audience is about to get cut deep in half because of this. Some of the top games this gen were dependent upon the Unreal engine. Only hope for Nintendo now is to go casual.

when will the first ue4 actually be released? right, not to soon. you think they will leave the wii u how it is right now like sony did a year with the vita?

i don't get your logic. wii had no unreal engine, so how should this cut it deep when there isn't anything to cut.

Remember those core gamers Nintendo was sure they were going to gain this gen because of the third party content? Yeah, cut those dreams in half.

The first Unreal Engine 4 games are due this holiday

Honestly Nintendo should buy a UE4 liscense, develop their own optimization tools and give them to developers

i never really expected the wii u to dominate, but it still will be a success in it's own way. you don't have to be on the top to be a successful company. and so on, i never really expected that they would gain the most 3rd party content after the wii. but we still didn't see the partnerships Iwata mentioned. so, we will still see some pearls.

Depends on how many things SE uses Luminous for. FF XV won't be on the Wii U.

That's a very good point.

But what other engine do SE use? If they are using UE4 the other projects in the future that could be a problem as well.

For their JP side:

I think SE only used UE3 for The Last Remnant. Otherwise I think they just stuck with Crystal Tools for FF. With Versus they said they're using an engine made with an action game like Versus in mind (might be a modified Crystal Tools?) + Luminous for lighting. No idea what Nier used. Star Ocean 4 used tri-Ace's Aska engine (which they also used for Infinite Undiscovery and Resonance of Fate). I don't see SE dabbling with UE4 now that they have Luminous. Presumably they'd use it for all their in-house games, particularly FF.

yeah I guess it makes sense financially to stick to their own engine. Coming years will be very interesting. Heck this years E3 and TGS should be very interesting too
