The Phantom Pain And Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Are Two Separate Games [Update]

Earlier today, Kojima Productions announced that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain together make up Metal Gear Solid V. This made it sound like the two are the same game, but this isn’t actually the case.

We got in touch with Konami to ask just what the deal is with the two titles, and the publisher’s Director of Public Relations, Jay Boor, informed us that they are in fact two separate games.

“Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are two separate games,” Boor clarified to Siliconera via e-mail. “GZ will be a prologue to The Phantom Pain.”

Meanwhile, on Twitter, Hideo Kojima writes: “’Ground Zeroes’ is a prologue of ‘MGSV’. 9 years after that event will be ‘The Phantom Pain’. MGSV is constructed w/ prologue and main game ‘TPP’. The game play demo I presented today is the opening of ‘TPP’ which is tutorial that starts from crawling.”

Update: When we pressed Boor for further details and asked if both The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes are for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, he replied: “Can’t comment on the SKUs unfortuantely [sic]. TPP is definitely 360 and PS3 though.”

Kojima has already revealed that GZ is like Peace Walker and also expressed interest in save transfers so Im going to assume GZ will be for Vita or a Vita/PS3 combo

Weird. Kojima said during the presentation that Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are MGSV. You can even see in the trailer of MGSV that it shows footage of ground zeroes and TPP. Ground Zeroes "prologue" reference of the game, is more kind of what virtuous mission was in MGS3.

This shit keeps getting more and more confusing.

........Ill buy both if that is case but I wont be happy about it. I would prefer them to be just one title.

hes saying "played together" they are MGS5. Think about pokemon red and Blue making up gen 1 just a more extreme case

both are one half of the full game

Like I said in the official presentation thread.

Ground Zeroes + Phantom Pain = MGSV

Two games that together makes one... like Chaper 1 and Chapter 2.

One think is certain...

Ground Zeroes is before the coma
Phantom Pain is after the coma

Why would a prologue be on the Vita then the main game be PS3/360? Makes no sense.

Most likely both parts are major enough to be considered two games, though they're all part of one game/SKU (MGSV).

They openly admit that PP is multiplat but want to be hush on GZ? Data transfer was big topic in the original GZ reveal which 360 cant take advantage of, and by Kojima own statement GZ is a prologue to the main game Phantom Pain. That does not sound equally important to me. Just a thought not holding fast to it at all
