Forums - Sony - Sony patents method to add Trophies to games without Trophy support.

I would love to see trophies for:
Eternal Sonata
Heavenly Sword
Folklore
Valkyria Chronicles

i thought trophies were pretty pointless for a while, but you get so used to them.

i just replayed the Phoenix Wright games lately and i constantly thought "hey, i finished this trial without any penalty! where is my reward?"

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I don't get the appeal. I"m going to buy a game, because it interest me,not because of some artificial trophies. If you buy a game just because of trophies, then should'nt you be buying every bad game out there. like naugty bear are some disney game. barbie horse racing. lol

it's more about adding some extra replay value.  I'll confess that I always just selected normal or easy before, but now that I know there'll be proof that I beat the game on hard or that I did something in a time limit or without dying or not using a certain thing it incentivizes me.  Now I go for that platinum and the hardest difficulty.  I don't buy games just for them or even look at them as a factor however.  That would just be dumb.  They're something for me to think about after I've run out of other things to do.  Although having 35 platinums when my next closest friend has 7 has taken the competitive side out of things lol.  I still like to get them on my favorite series.  Uncharted, Infamous, GoW, Ratchet and Clank, Skyrim, Sly, Resistance 3, I love having these games all platinumed because it makes me feel like there's nothing else left to go for and now I just sit back and relax while enjoying the series/game on easy.

I do however HATE 2 things.  1. When a developer makes you unlock the hardest difficulty by beating the second hardest.  Why the hell don't you just let me play on the hardest from the start assholes!?  You're just forcing me to have a frustrating, though satisfying when I beat it, playthrough twice!  When I get past a checkpoint on the hardest mode I think "great now I've proven that I can do it and never have to again" when I get past a checkpoint on the second hardest difficulty to unlock the other one I think "by god that's going to be even harder when I have to do all this again!" 2. When they have one for reaching the max rank in MP.  If your MP is good I'll play it regardless (not a big MP guy) and if your SP is great then I'm not going to trade in your game because I'll go back and play through it when I get the itch for a great experience.  To me this shows a lack of confidence that you have to put a trophy in there just to incentivize me to play your MP.  Especially in a very SP focused game like Tomb Raider.  The MP is trash and yet they force you to trudge through MP if you want that platinum (which I don't do because I only play them if it's fun in the end and I'm not doing a hundred hours of MP just to get a trophy).

Bottom line is they're optional and if they seem like fun things to shoot for I'll go for the platinum.  If I try a hard mode and it's just too much or not fun, or if it makes me do some ridiculous thing like never die in the whole game on hard mode, then no thanks.  No one should buy a game for them, but if they enhance your experience for an already excellent game then more power to you.

you make some great points. I personally buy games for the experience and not the challenge. I just put it on the easiest mode and that's it. I'm an older gamer and don't have time to play games like how I want 2. It takes me months just 2 go through a game on easy mode. I only play games probably 3 times a week at the most. I have alot of trophies, but %75 of them are bronze and most of them are just from beating the game on easy mode. lol

First I want to say that it's a great idea to add trophies to old games. Not only does it give a new reason to play a classic but it also gets people to buy the game just for the trophies. It's good for gamers and business.

But what I really want to point out is how you really shouldn't be able to patent an idea like this. It's like putting a hat on a donkey and saying nobody else can do it because you thought of it first. Patents are for inventions and adding trophies to old games is not an invention. HD collections have added trophies and Konami recently patched MGS4 with trophies. So it's not even the first time trophies have been added to a game that didn't have them originally.

Great idea, bad patent.

By your logic, all Apple patents would have to be considerd bad!

Yep, and I hated the bullshit jury decision against Samsung. Apple thinks it can patent "look & feel". They lost it when they went up against MS in the 80s, but dumb ass jurors today think Apple invented everything so they must deserve patents on it all. I'm going to stop because I've ranted about Apple's bogus patents enough in the past. Sony's isn't as bad, but I still don't like it. Adding trophies or achievements to games isn't new and it's not a patentable idea. Unfortunately the US patent office doesn't have time of funding to care so they just approve anything that hasn't already gotten a patent and expect later for lawsuits sort it out.
