Well, it is a story-driven game. It was meant to focus on the story.

I think most people did never realize how much work was actually put into the Story of FF XIII. Here is a link to a deeper plot analyis from Gamefaqs, just to show how much depth there was actually in the game.

Final Fantasy took its story very serious. The time aspect was very vital to the game, since the Characters were branded and they only had little time to fulfill their focus. I mean, think about it... how would it make any sense if you see in the story missions that the characters have only little time left before they turn into monsters... and then they go on various unimportant sidequests as if they had all the time in the world.

There is a cutscene where the citizens realize that the characters are L'Cie and they were panicked by them. How would it fit if you see this scene and after the cutscene you go shopping aroun in the town and are small-talking to characters as if everything was okay... With the same people that were panicked moments before.

Final Fantasy XIII was a story-driven game. It was not meant to played for 200 hours+. It was meant to tell a thrilling story. In in this part I absolutely loved Final Fantasy XIII. But this is my peronal opinion.

@ Linearity.
I will try to explain my personal experience with The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion why I feel that Non-linearity in RPGs is actually the bad thing. Although you have so much content in this game and you can do them almost whenever you want and you can spent 200h+ with this game... I did not get any satisfaction out of this game. Most things that I did felt like totally unimportant. There was no deeper meaning to the game. The Main quest felt uninspired and the worst thing what that it felt disconnected to the game world.

I mean, the world is in grave danger and I am supposed to battle the threat. But I am busy doing random sidequests and try to make a career in the various guilds (which would not mean much if the main quests fails anyway.). This non-linearity made me feel that almost everything in this game was random and without deeper meaning... But maybe I am just no big fan of open-world/sandbox games.

Understatement of the year.  Reading a book is less linear than FFXIII.  You spend 95% of the game running down a 10 step wide pipe.  Then when it seems like it finally opens up you find out its just an illusion and there is still only one path to follow.   FFXIII is my biggest disappointment this gen bar none.

The new designs look so much better.  My only problem is that they still have Gameplay character models, and cutscenes character models in this new version. This game is running on the PS3 and VITA; they should just have the cutscenes/important events (not CGI obviously) character models at all the time, and not enhance those poor versions of the characters.

Enhancing the low polygon, low texture character models is a waste of time and resources because the consoles in which this game will be played can handle very easily the High poly and detail characters all the time.  Or they can only change things that already exist in the game, but can not replace them??

The sales of these games are weaker than FF13; but by no means has this genre fallen. it has been FF13 that has sullyed the reputation of JRPGs, not the other way round.

And yes the developers are highly accountable for the quality of FF13. When Kitase says that FF13 was greatly inspired by Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Lost the TV show, and Leonia Lewis will be doing the vocal track for the game; it means the developers are aware of what their doing. Thats not the fault of other Japanese developers, thats the fault of the developers themselves, no blame can be laid at the other games which represent the JRPG genre.



Gah, I need this in my life! Let me start off by saying the game looks beautiful~ that being said I used to think I was unlucky to not of played Both FFX & FFX-2 now I find my self Licky epicness cuz not only will I be about to play these two final fantasy games in a much better quality with trophies but I get to play them on the PSVita's Amazing OLED Screen where the colors are Second to none and as a bonus I get two Hard copies of then game for the PSVita I'm not getting it for the PS3 just cuz of that I rather have two copies in my hand with two different cover arts then just one with a mix box art I'm getting this game day one and hope it'll have some kinda Limited Edition!
