TRUE STORY - as related to me by Peter Doherty:

When I wrote that song I was pretty clean, just coming down off a hard night of drinking and cocaine with a little heroin on the side when Kate wasn't looking. When I woke up I had a bloody nasty hangover so I popped a vicodin and two valiums. Twenty minutes later I was feeling pretty fit but felt very knackered. I drank a bottled water and lay down on the couch playing my favorite song "I wanna be like you - King Loiuse". A little red ballon on the table caught my eye and I checked it out... sure enough, it was enough for some more "hair of the dog" and maybe just a wee bit more. So I got my needle and my spoon and some water from one of the half full bottles laying around. A bit of cotton salvaged from a fairly clean cotton bud was useful.

So everything is ready to go and I'm taking off my belt when Katie walks in. She says "STOP THAT NOW!" and I told her "Katie, you can't stop me now." She said "My little Peter Pike Paddy, I really can't stand you when you're doing this right after you wake up." That's when I started humming "Can't stand you now" as she stormed out of the room. I fixed and kept humming the little tune I had made up. I had a lovely nap and then Carl popped over and I played him the bit of the song I had. And that's how that song got written.

For the most part I write when I'm sober. Usually if I start doing drugs I don't stop until I'm way past the point that I can do anything creative. When I'm writing I may have a beer or a few pills but just enough to ease the sufferings of my body. I can't have crack, meth or jack around if I want to write.

As far as playing, I play when I'm totally mashed. I've got terrible stage fright and I can't even go out there until I can't remember where I've hidden the family jewels. I have done some shows where I only did a terrific amount of coke and a few shots of whiskey but I have to go off stage every 2-3 songs and get some more.
