I bought a USB adapter for my Wii that I believe is compatible with Wii-U. Might've solved your problem with wifi (I much prefer using a wired connection as well).
It's a shame you couldn't find enough to like about Wii-U at the moment. All I'll say about it is: if you're picking up any of the eighth-gen systems, make sure to WAIT before they have the games you want before buying them. Don't buy them on the promise of X or the "expected release date" of Y.
It's the example I always use, but I wanted a Vita at launch. However, I waited until it had 3 games that I REALLY wanted (Gravity Rush; WipEout 2048; LittleBigPlanet) and a load of peripheral stuff that I would be willing to try out (in my case, that was PSP titles). In Vita's case, that only occurred in October of last year, when LBP released. But it made my purchase justified in my mind. Even if Sony killed Vita tomorrow, I would be happy with my purchase.
So I'd say don't buy your Wii-U back or a PS4/Nextbox until you're sure it has the games to satisfy what you want from a console.
And incidentally, I hope you enjoy your PS3. It's a good console with an incredible catalogue of games; especially if you're new to it, there will be so much you can dip into.
