Forums - Gaming - Anybody think 8 gb of GDDR5 is a mistake for PS4

They couldn't have changed the GPU last minute because it would have screwed all development and release dates, but adding more RAM is easy.

sure but depends how much the extra ram cost them, if they want success, they can't over price the system, 399$-449$ is the max.

It's not a mistake at all. When I build a PC I always go with the most RAM I can afford. Sony and MS are going with the most RAM that won't break their profit margin. It's only a mistake if the RAM costs so much that they have to sell at a huge loss. I doubt Sony will sell at a huge loss.

8 GB of RAM is a result of calculations - not because it sounds cool.
I can think of some thing like (mun of polygons) * (the average size of polygon) * (bitmap size in memory)
and you get something like 7GB of ram.

Computing is science. You can count on it. xD
No pun intended.

I doubt that 8GB of GDDR5 is in any way comparable to the PS3's CELL + BluRay costs.

i'm just thinking is the 4gb of ram worth it, will many games actually use it, they could have went with a much better gpu instead of the 4gb but as some one said i guess it was too late, here is the price estamation for ps4 parts from beyond3d.

PU (CPU/GPU) - 85-90
8GB GDDR5 - 110-140
OS Chip (supposedly ARM based) - 12-18
Video encode/decode chip - 8-12
Blu-ray drive - 18-25
Hard drive - 38-50
I/O - 9-12
Wireless chip + antenna - 4
HDMI+HDCP - 11-15
Other - 25-35

Total - 320-401

I don't see anyway that more RAM and faster RAM could be spun as a bad thing.

I never said it was a bad thing, but i just think 4gb of gddr5 is enough, especially if you get a much better gpu or even have the system drop in price by 50$. i personally owuld rather have a much better gpu, 4gb is of gddr5 is still better then 8gb of ddr3

Don't forget, not all that RAM will go to gaming. All that share stuff they put into the console probably uses a good deal when live storing the latest 15mins of your game play.

I might have this wrong but I thought the games will only use 4gb of that RAM with the rest being used for things like the OS and social features like constantly having your last 2 minutes or so of gameplay buffered in the RAM for sharing.

that's true, i'm happy with the ps4 specs, but i won't pay more then 399$ or i guess i will have to wait.

it's suppose to have 7gb availble for games.
