Initially? Because the Taliban wouldn't hand over Osama Bin Laden after 9/11. We told them that any country that harbored Al Queda would be attacked. They didn't budge, and neither did we.
But that was over 10 years ago. Since the attacks on Tora Bora, we've been there "Nation building" - trying to keep the Taliban out of power. Its idiotic. We're getting no where, and costing lives and soldiers.
We've needed to be out of this war for at least 5 years.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
are you kidding?
always thought you are a smart guy now asking such questions.
Of course your country won't leave-as long as there are things of value to grab and huge ressources america will stay and give you democracy right in your face.
USA entered afghanistan-why?
What was the reason? to get former cia agent tim osman aka bin laden?
wasting billions to catch one single person?lol
USA are there because of the tapi pipeline(and other ressources). In the 90ies the usa kicked out the argentinans companies out to get the deal, but the negotiation with the taliban and the us oil companies went wrong and the companies left afghanistan with the promise to come back and bring them democracy.
Now they are there and they won't leave until they get the tapi pipeline and the other ressources.
Since the USA entered Afhanistan the heroin production went up 1000% thx to the usa-exactly what conspiracy theorist have predicted.
The same dirty drug dealing that happened with air america in vietnam.Meanwhile it is common knowledge that us soldiers are guarding poppy fields.Even washinton post wrote about it.
As the taliban are a construct of the Cia(sybel edmonds, dana rohrabacher) to fight ussr in afghsnistan in the 80ies-they still have close ties to some of them-of course they will start working again with the taliban if they think this is the easier way to conzrol the ressources.
When will countries learn just to not invade Afghanistan?, it has humiliated the British Empire, the USSR and now the USA. The Afghan war was such a waste of time and human life, i don't know why people really though this war was a good idea. What was this war supposed to achieve anyway? it don't seem like much came out of it to me. The money wasted on this war, could of really benefited some people in the US. The same applies to the other failure, Iraq, which actually had no purpose at all, it seems.
Just leave quickly, like you did in Vietnam and be done with it. And just don't declare war again, the US had proved to be incompetant at it

The point of Afghanistan was to remove the Taliban from power. We didn't really like them that much because they would give us Bin Laden. Representatives from the Taliban even visited the USA before the war (we were friends up to the point of 9/11 with the Taliban). The war wasn't even fought by that many troops at first. Was mainly special ops and CIA giving shitloads of money to the Northern Alliance and using air power for support. Most Americans are tired of the wars and no one really cared after Bush left office. Very few Americans even care about the wars anymore and there are more news reports on reality TV stars in USA than there is war coverage.
USA is competent at fighting wars. Iraq and Afghanistan fell pretty easily. We just suck at maintaining the peace and nation building (the two most important steps after a war). Pretty tough though when you are in a country where most of the people don't want you there to begin with.

I just don't believe there was a point to going to Afghanistan. It just seems like the truth on who caused 9/11 is very cloudy. Also, i swear the USA helped the Taliban to defeat the Soviets in the 1980's. How can the ally become an enemy that quick?
But anyway, America may have toppled the regime in Iraq and Afghanistan, but they are so politically unstable now. And if all they wanted to do was get of Saddam Hussein, why didn't leave straight afterwards? The war in Iraq didn't end until 2010, but Hussein was overthrown and killed in 2003, not long after the invasion. Sometimes, wars should just not happen at all, Iraq is definately one of those wars. Afghanistan, did one thing right, it lead to more equal rights for women, although that wasn't intentional but happened as Taliban lost some power.

Destroy a country, get everything that has some value and get the hell outta there leaving nothing but ashes - Gotta love the american way of life!
I also don't know what the point was. Maybe Bush just really wanted the US Army to finally win a war again. I hope it was worth the trillions of dollars as well as all of the people who died in that absolutely pointless war. But maybe you just need bombs to bring democracy. And don't bother asking those people if they even want democracy. Whatever...

Well they might as well invade Pakistan cause the Taliban there are destroying that country and the police/army there can't stop them.
