Forums - Sony - So, who has played God of War: Ascension already and can (spoiler-free) debunk or confirm the lower than expected reviews?!

I'll try not to spoil anything but the story I've seen so far is very intriguing.  More thought was put into it and I was surprised with the beginning cause I was expecting something else entirely.  The game sort of starts off with Uncharted in that it throws you in the middle of things and then goes into a flashback leading up to current events... at least I think anyways, I'm not going to really play much more until I finish Tomb Raider.

@Heavenly_King

I know I'll get slammed for liking Lair, but I haven't trusted reviewers since I read IGN's review for it and it was all lies.  You never know what kind of builds reviewers are given.  Plus it's gotten worse since.  Reviewers have this elitism now where if they can't get some instant gratification it'll get slammed, plus the way they've screwed up with reviewing games early on really hurt them now since anything lower than a 9 sucks according to them.  Publishers buying reviews is becoming a huge problem too which is making things worse.  There's no credibility in gaming journalism anymore.  I used to go to IGN to read their reviews because they used to break the game into categories and go into great depth with each, sometimes I'd be reading a 4/5 page review because of the depth.  Now it's all 1 page garbage written by people who have no more writing experience higher than elementary school.  To sum up about God of War though;  Is it getting a bit stale?  Yes I think it is, and this should be the last game that's made classically.  Do I think it's worth less than a 9 yet?  God no.

Well if Adam Sessler's review is anything to go by these criticisms are irrelevant and/or strange.  He insults a trophy name and says its offensive because you bash a Fury's face in making it about her being a woman getting her face kicked in which is just ridiculous (I like Sess but that was way too pc for me).  I don't mind if a SP game just gives me a new adventure with the same basic gameplay.  It is a nice bonus if a sequel introduces some radical change and pulls it off, but I look to new IP for new gameplay.  I look to sequels for refinement.  New bosses, weapons, conflicts, powers, and story is enough for me in a franchise like this.  Maybe my standards are low but that's all I want and all I ever expected from it.

I just watched Sessler's review yesterday. It seemed like a fair review till he got to that trophy part and just went freaking nuts about it. The whole time i'm thinking "...is..is it really that big of a deal?"

Around the Network

I havent played the game yet. But i have seen about 2 hours from the game right now. ( there is much stuff on youtube to be seen)

But what i have seen from the game is gameplay wise God of War 3 on steroids. Sure its not much new or innovative but everything they did in God of War 3 they did better in Ascenbsion ( the climbing for an example)

And without spoiling too much the scene with the machanic snake is something of the most epic i have seen so far.

Cant tell much about the story at this time but i will give you all a full GOw Ascension review once my game arrive and i have finished it.

From what i have seen so far i seriously call the Reviews utterly bullshit.

It's been a while since I've read such a well-worded OP.

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but a lot of trophies have silly names in serious games and are popular phrases like that.  Also beating up a "woman" who is a villain and a demon like being shouldn't be treated any different than killing a male god.  The furies obviously are something more than normal women so I really don't see how he can just say it was like beating any woman's face in.

A game feeling less epic can't be justified with "it's a prequel", if epicness is a key feature of GoW's appeal. Maybe they made the wrong game!

If I can relate, making Other M about Samus' vulnerability and subservience 'because it's a prequel' was still the wrong choice.

That's the thing though Soleron, they actually made it more epic.  The "Titan gameplay" has way more scale in this game.  I mean what they did in the beginning of the game makes the Chronus' boss fight look like some non-epic fight (Can't think of a better way to put it).

Its not entirely the scale and the technical aspect of it (Not to say thats not remarkable).

The epicness was the fact of where the story was going. You had freaking traveled in time to get the Titans with you to climb Mount Olympus ontop of Gaia in order to fight a war against the gods of olympus.

Shit doesnt get more epic than that!

Now if they want to throw Kratos in a prison and have it be ontop of a Titan thats even larger: Sure. But it doesnt hold the same value. Especially with how GoW2 ended, setting up GoW3 with hype that lasted 5 years!

Epic story vs epic gameplay, which are reviewers complaining about?  Literally, which one?  I'm not gonna bother reading reviews.  Cause if they're complaining about epic gameplay, which is what I gather from the review thread, then they're dead wrong.

I don't think they're dead wrong as many say it doesnt have nearly as many boss battles as the previous GoWs. It might have way fewer that are bigger but combine that with a less epic story and its just a sequence thats briefly cool and technically amazing but nothing that compares to the previous ones.
