Forums - Sony - GoW Ascension: Review Thread

Yea I was hoping Greg was going to do it since Colin doesn't like Kratos that much. I'm unsure how this guy will interpret it, but based on what he gave in the single player section I'm expecting an 8. Unless the MP comes off VERY good for him. That part seems highly subjective - some sites saying it is tacked on while others are saying it is profound and extremely fun. Let's see what IGN thinks.

IGN's reviews will play an important role. A lot of people go there for 'wisdom' and treat their reviews as gospel. Hopefully it pulls out a 9 since 8 is seemingly unworthy of the masses these days.

for a AAA game, you expect it to be at least a 9.   Or how did you expected Halo4 to be reviewed? with 8s?? I really think you expected it to be an ultra masterpiece that should be rated accordingly.   I think like that, but with GOW:Ascension.   It deserves better score (the demo, leaked playthroughs, and videos are spectacular for me), so hopefully IGN will give it a 9 to bump up the overall score.

I hate when reviews matter so much in sales!!

The RAGE!!!! XD

Bro, IGN's 9 wont do shit to the score. At this point we need a few 10's to get it up and it's not happening.

Let's hope its not lower than 8 because the guy reviewing it sure doesnt sound too impressed.

And there's a difference. Some use AAA as a way to indicate a high budget. Others use it to indicate a 9/10 score or 90/100 metacritic game. Guess you can seperate it by saying AAA Quality or AAA Budget xD

I feel reviewers are shitting on everything released so late in this gen. Like everything (multipats and exclusives).

agreed. i saw this coming aswell. it's not going to get any better for GEARS, and the last of us.

i think the last of us will score very high. it's a new ip, reviewers don't complain about something which is not really bad then. beyond will also get a good score because it's not heavy rain 2.

I agree. TLOU has an advantage. The media is all horny for it too unlike Ascension and Judgment lol.

Beyond is a bit of a gamble. That KIND of game in general is always risky.

I saw you on Lifestyle. I thought you were going to send a nuke at the reviewer's house if he didn't bump the score up from 8.5 to 9. :D

I thinks it's best we wait for Digital Foundry before we start call out graphics king, besides it bloody annoying watching the same users at each others throats.

Didn't do Halo 4 any good against Journey.

A game can be technically impressive but still fall short on accolade. History kind of shows that linear games tend to have the advantage and it indicates the same in reviews as well. GoW even has a fixed camera which controls what you see. That, in of itself is a huge advantage.

Except, Halo 4's graphical awards was split down the middle between technically and artstyle where as Jouney was all artstyle.

Yeah but a lot of sites don't even do Technical and Art. Some simply do "Visual" -> What looks the best to the editorial staff.

Linear games tend to be the most "crisp" ones. I've said this numerous times:

Halo 4 is technically great and the art also is fantastic. But if you take a game that is linear and show off a rock in that game (asuming the developers know the hardware and arent complete idiots), it'll look better than a rock in Halo 4 that is in the midst of a huge ass battlefield. Why? Because Halo 4 has much more to process and the detail throughout isn't AS high as a game that has a tiny section. It's common sense!

Say you have a room that is four squares and your friend has one that is 400 squares. Say for the sake of the argument that you're both equally skilled and both have a timeline of a couple of hours to get it done. Now do you seriously think he could work as detailed on every single one of those squares as you could? (Not to mention hardware limitations as well.. let's say the pencils are limited!).

Reviewers like many aren't entirely into the whole "technical aspect". They can appreciate and be wow'd by it.

"Wow RDR is stunning, its a huge world and it feels so alive, the sunset yada yada yada".

But ultimately when Kratos is standing and just looking into the camera -> The work on him alone seals the deal. Why? Because SSM put insane amounts of time on Kratos and since the game is linear and they have full control over the camera => They CAN do this.

Critics wont go "Well this was more impressive if you THINK about it whereas this just is better looking".

That's simply my thoughts on it. Don't be too shocked if Ascension wins because if the past years is any indication: It wouldn't be shocking at all.

It's linear, camera is in control of the developers, reviews are praising it moreso than Crysis 3 (on consoles ofcourse!) from what I am reading.

But yeah let's wait till' the end of the year.

EDIT:
This allows for some ridicilous stuff in Journey like when the camera is taken into the developers hand and this is showcased =>

Not exactly. Have you seen the sand?

Have you seen Cortana's ass?

It's a fine piece of ass, but I'd argue Chloe's got a better one and our main character actually touches it :P

Some reviews are praising Ascension graphics like we don't need more PS4... a true next-gen graphics.

God of War: Ascension Vs. The PlayStation 4

I think it is the last and definitive GRAPHIC KING for this generation. Sony Santa Monica set the bar too high for the others games.

Laughable scores. How can God of War all of a sudden only deserve a 7? I can't trust reviewers anymore.

I know right? But just ..maybe MAYBE the MP actually did take a hit on the SP. Like I don't mean the SP is bad, but the purpose of telling the story is a bit.. less "exciting" than GoW3 would you not agree? It feels as if Ascensions sole purpose is to try the MP. Why? So that they can have a MP in the PS3 era? I doubt that.

I think the real question is: What the fuck is Stig Asmussen and his SSM team doing xD. I dont really think its GoWIV but if it is: It kinda makes me go "ahaaa".

Nah I think this team wanted to try the MP and still give us an experience in the SP. But the purpose of the game seems rather obvious to me. And it is quite clever rather than starting a trilogy or something and baking the MP in too. It is simply too much.

You mean it's "less exciting" because it's a prequel?

I agree that Ascension is somewhat a test game for MP and that MP often steals resources from MP in one way or another. But if they're testing MP then it's probably here to stay, and thus should take away resources from SP in the future too, right?

Do you have the game already?

No I don't have the game already, it is mere speculation on my part!

Yeah, it could take resources from the SP in the future as well but when you already have a system to go from: I'd argue it is easier than doing it from scratch. Not to mention you sort of know what you're getting yourself into. And I am sure by the PS4 time, they will have an even bigger team and prioritize the game more. If you look at The Last Of Us: ND has people that worked on both UC2, UC3 AND NOW even on TLOU. That's why I want to know what Stigs team (director of GoW3) is up to. Maybe their project is 10 times more ambitious than Ascension.

Do u think Stig is doing a God of War game for the PS4 or some other IP?

I don't want to wait so long for a GoW on PS4.
