See! See! See that OP? That is what guy with second biggest thread of all time is talking about!

Don't reply to this post bananaking. Oh wait!.... maybe ... don't I want you to quote me?

Nintendo's most profitable platform is HandHeld Gaming. They will never want to let that go, they will keep pumping HandHelds out until the market for them shrivels up and dies.. (I'm just guessing here, but it pretty much makes sense.)

Sony? They are questionable. Since they are in both the HandHeld Market and Cellphone Market they might have to choose which is more important to them in the end. (Which is more profitable?)

nintendo's handhelds are more profitable is because they sell way more than their home consoles.

and smartphones are way way more profitable. since they sell for a much higher price. for example the vita is considerd really expensive and is only 250$, an unlocked smartphone can go up to 600/700$ dollars. just look at all the money apple and samsung are making and then realize that most of that money are from smartphones.

Sony didnt buy out their share of ericsson in the mobile market for nothing. they know that for atleast the next few years the smartphone market is a gold mine

I don't know, to be honest. I'll have to wait and see how the next two years go with 3DS and Vita before I predict whether or not either of those companies switch over to iOS/Android/Windows devices for their handheld games.

Normally I'd say Nintendo would never leave the portable handheld market, as it's nearly half of their business, but if Iwata ends up leaving next year due to not achieving 100 billion yen profit, who knows what happens with them... Presumably his successor would be willing to develop games for mobile/tablet devices, if he was unwilling to do so.

Are you trying to say that Sony will drop out of the HandHeld race?

i really dont know. sony's 3 major departments now are mobile, gaming and imaging. if they had to chose between either handhelds or smartphones the realistic thing is to go for smartphones. though they dont really have to chose and can do both. i think sony needs to adjust its strategy when it comes to handhelds though if it wants to continue

I thought Audio/Music was one of their biggest?

i dont know if audio/music are under imaging or not but since kaz was promoted and took over he has been rebuilding the bussines structure of sony. the main three focuses are as i said, imaging, mobile and games

Audio/music is no longer a priority for them, merely limited functionality for that in their devices, but no investment in audio devices.  I disagree with Bananaking21 about Sony dropping dedicated handhelds in favor of smartphones. I think both are vital to their survival, and both represent vastly different markets.  No one going into an electronics store looking for a phone is comparing a Vita with an Experia Z.   Conversely, no one going into a GameStop looking for a handheld game system is comparing an Experia Z with a Vita.   They reach two different markets, and I don't think there is very much overlap.

The consumer who uses a smartphone and plays games on it has a less than 1 in 10 chance of ever spending a penny of real money on a smartphone game.  Someone who owns a Vita is spending tons of money on full-price games as well as accessories multiple times a month.  Sony needs money from both of those groups.

I don't think Sony will look at the aspect of diversity, more of how much money it makes them. If their HandHeld becomes a black hole for their profits then they will drop it. I don't think that would be a question in their minds. (Especially if it's difficult for Sony to support the console because of budgets. Then again, this is speculation.)
