and smartphones are way way more profitable. since they sell for a much higher price. for example the vita is considerd really expensive and is only 250$, an unlocked smartphone can go up to 600/700$ dollars. just look at all the money apple and samsung are making and then realize that most of that money are from smartphones. 

Sony didnt buy out their share of ericsson in the mobile market for nothing. they know that for atleast the next few years the smartphone market is a gold mine

i really dont know. sony's 3 major departments now are mobile, gaming and imaging. if they had to chose between either handhelds or smartphones the realistic thing is to go for smartphones. though they dont really have to chose and can do both. i think sony needs to adjust its strategy when it comes to handhelds though if it wants to continue
